'Superman' Box Office Collection: David Corenswet Is Still Miles Away From Beating Henry Cavill's Domestic Collection With Man of Steel
Despite having a stellar start for James Gunn’s DCU and Superman earning high numbers in its box office debut, the film is still lagging behind Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder’s 2013 masterpiece, Man of Steel.
James Gunn and David Corenswet‘s Superman premiered to awesome reviews and critical acclaim when the film was released worldwide on July 11. With previews and opening day sales, the film reached a high number in terms of earnings and has consistently been earning more and more. But, something seems to be interfering with Superman’s way as people are watching the film, trying to keep up with the earnings of Man of Steel, and some fear that Zack Snyder could have been the better choice, after all.
There’s nothing to be sad about (yet), as even though Superman hasn’t yet overtaken Henry Cavill‘s Man of Steel, it has still managed to outearn several of the DC movies, just on the basis of its domestic box office earnings.

According to a tweet on X, Superman ended up earning more in its domestic debut weekend than 4 DC movies, namely: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Shazam: Fury of the Gods.
Film Title | Box Office Collection |
Superman | $125 million (on-going) |
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom | $124.5 million |
The Flash | $108.1 million |
Blue Beetle | $72.5 million |
Shazam: Fury of the Gods | $57.6 million |
According to The-Numbers, pre-sales of the movie reached a figure of $22,500,00, and combined with its first day sales, the figure reached a total of $56 million ($56,109,755 to be exact). At the moment of writing, Superman‘s domestic collection stands at an amount of $125 million. However, that’s nowhere near close to Henry Cavill and Zack Snyder‘s DCEU flick, Man of Steel.
Box Office Mojo reports that Man of Steel had an opening of $116 million, but after its theatrical run was done in domestic theaters, Man of Steel stood with a whopping $291 million in terms of domestic earnings, which is $166 million more than James Gunn’s flick. With that being said, Superman has only had one week in theaters, and we have reason to believe that the DCU flick will eventually beat Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.
It’s not a question of ‘if’, but a question of ‘when’, since the trends in earnings of Superman are showcasing a positive outcome where the James Gunn flick eventually goes on to beat Man of Steel.

After Man of Steel‘s premiere, the domestic earnings reached a high of $44 million on its second day and $36 million on its third day. However, ever since the third day, the film’s earnings started dipping gradually, with some exceptions (which is generally the case with every film).
On the other hand, Superman‘s second-day earnings were reported to be $37 million and $31 million on its third day (which is a much smaller dip than Man of Steel). Add that to weekends and box office collections, and the trend seems to be looking much upwards for the James Gunn flick.
Word-of-mouth, his indirect competition with Zack Snyder’s DCEU, and the rivalry between Snyder and Gunn fans will probably get the movie more views and earnings, as more and more people will want to see what Gunn has in store for his version of the character compared to Snyder’s.
Superman has already outearned Man of Steel in terms of opening weekend domestic earnings, and I think that it’s only a matter of time before the James Gunn flick outearns Zack Snyder’s 2013 film. Of course, there is a possibility that Superman might not be able to do so. But it is Gunn’s DCU now, and all we can do is witness what this humorous and quirky director has in store for DC’s Gods and Monsters.
