Super Falcons Triumph Over Comoros in Thrilling Olympic Qualifier Clash

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have embarked on a fresh quest for Olympic qualification, aiming for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. This campaign began with a crucial first-leg match against Comoros at the Remo Stars Sports Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, kick-starting a new chapter following recent disappointments in the African championship and World Cup qualification.

Nigeria's journey through the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco was fraught with challenges, culminating in a 1-0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon and a subsequent 2-1 defeat by South Africa in the CAF/FIFA play-off. These results not only dashed their hopes for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup but also marked the first time the Falcons missed out on the WAFCON semi-finals. With the Olympic qualifiers presenting a renewed opportunity, Nigeria faces the daunting task of navigating four rounds and eight matches to secure one of Africa’s two coveted tickets to Los Angeles, having previously participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, the Nigeria Football Federation’s Technical Director and former Super Eagles captain and coach, is overseeing a rebuilding phase. He has assembled a diverse squad blending seasoned internationals with promising emerging talents for the double-header against Comoros. Key experienced players include goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, now a regular at Brighton & Hove Albion, defenders Michelle Alozie, Shukurat Oladipo, and Glory Ogbonna. In midfield, captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Jennifer Echegini, and Christy Ucheibe provide depth and quality, while Uchenna Kanu, Gift Monday, and Joy Omewa lead the attacking line.

The Falcons were mindful not to underestimate Comoros, despite their opponents' emphatic 30-0 aggregate victory in the previous round. Nigeria's past struggles highlighted concerns over finishing, defensive organisation, and preparation, areas Eguavoen prioritized in his first competitive assignment. The team's WAFCON campaign saw numerous missed opportunities and defensive lapses, including a costly set-piece error against Cameroon. Disruptions from late player arrivals and injuries further complicated preparations. Therefore, the match against Comoros was expected to be a test of improved defensive solidity and greater efficiency in front of goal, offering the players a chance to regain confidence and commence their long road to Los Angeles 2028 on a positive note.

The first leg, played on Friday, saw Nigeria's Super Falcons secure a 2-0 victory over Comoros at the Remo Stars Stadium. After a goalless first half, the nine-time African champions intensified their pressure in the second half. Michelle Alozie broke the deadlock in the 48th minute, finishing past Comoros goalkeeper Aicha Said following a headed pass from Gift Monday. Uchenna Kanu then doubled Nigeria's advantage in the 60th minute, heading home a corner delivered by Jennifer Echegini.

Despite dominating possession and creating several opportunities in the first half, Nigeria was initially thwarted by crucial saves from Said. However, the Super Falcons' persistence paid off after the interval, as they converted two of their chances. This 2-0 lead provides Nigeria with a comfortable cushion heading into the second leg, scheduled for Monday, October 13, at the same venue in Ikenne. For the 10-time African champions, the immediate objective is clear: build on this advantage and take a significant step towards another Olympic appearance.
