Super Falcons Star Esther Okoronkwo Faces Racist Abuse, Reveals Shocking Theft!
Super Falcons midfielder Esther Okoronkwo faced racist abuse on social media after reporting cash theft from herself and teammates ahead of the WAFCON 2026. The Nigeria Football Federation has condemned the discrimination, affirming the team's unity and focus on their upcoming matches.
The Super Falcons, Nigeria's national women's football team, have been embroiled in controversy ahead of their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco. Midfielder Esther Okoronkwo revealed she and several teammates were victims of cash theft at their hotel, an incident that was regrettably followed by a wave of racist abuse directed at her on social media for speaking out.
The theft occurred at the Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, where the team was staying before relocating to Rabat for their Group C matches. Okoronkwo disclosed that not only her cash, but also money belonging to prominent players such as goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Michelle Alozie, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, was stolen. The situation escalated when, after making these revelations, Okoronkwo began receiving abhorrent racist comments on her Instagram account, including monkey emojis and other highly offensive messages.
In response to the vile abuse, Okoronkwo issued a powerful statement on Sunday, emphasizing unity and determination. "Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that. We move forward with pride, unity and determination. See you on the pitch," she wrote, reaffirming the team's resolve to remain focused on their upcoming tournament.
The theft case itself has seen a swift resolution. Reports confirm that a suspect has been apprehended and has admitted involvement in the incident. Nigerian journalist and former Super Eagles media officer Colin Udoh stated that the suspect was expected to make full restitution, and was subsequently sentenced to six months in prison, with the stolen cash returned in full. Udoh, however, also highlighted the need for football authorities to address the racist abuse, calling upon FIFA, CAF, and CAF Women to take concrete action against such unacceptable behavior.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) promptly condemned the racist abuse directed at Okoronkwo. In a statement released on Monday, the NFF unequivocally stated that "Discrimination in any form has no place in football or society." The federation underscored the irony and senselessness of the racist comments, especially given the perpetrator of the theft had been caught and justice served. The NFF affirmed its unwavering commitment to the "safety, dignity, and well-being of our players," assuring the public that the "entire team stands united, unbothered by distractions, and fully focused on tomorrow’s #WAFCON2026 opener against Malawi."
As these off-field challenges unfold, the Super Falcons remain poised for their WAFCON 2026 campaign. They are set to kick off their Group C matches against Malawi on Tuesday, before facing Zambia and Egypt, with their sights firmly set on securing a record 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, despite the recent adversities.
