Super Eagles WCQ Drama - Qualification Hopes & Pressure Mounts!
)
Nigeria's Super Eagles are facing a critical juncture in their quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the team currently positioned in a challenging fourth place in Group C. Amidst these high stakes, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has expressed strong confidence that the Super Falcons' recent triumphant win at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will serve as a powerful catalyst for the men’s national team. The Super Falcons' sensational 3-2 comeback victory over Morocco in the WAFCON final, after trailing 2-0, has been hailed by Gusau as a testament to the resilient Nigerian spirit, which he hopes will translate into a mindset shift for the Super Eagles.
The Super Eagles have officially opened their camp in Uyo to prepare for their pivotal Group C qualifiers. Among the first players to arrive at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel were Captain William Troost-Ekong, defender Bruno Onyemaechi, and goalkeeper Amas Obasogie. Head coach Eric Chelle is leading the preparations, with the team scheduled to hold its first official training session on Tuesday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium practice pitch. These matches are considered crucial for Nigeria to secure a ticket to the expanded 2026 World Cup in North America.
The team is set to resume its World Cup qualifying campaign with a home game against Rwanda’s Amavubi on Saturday, September 6, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Just three days later, Chelle’s side will travel to Bloemfontein for a high-stakes clash against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on Tuesday, September 9. Both fixtures are paramount for Nigeria’s qualification aspirations, as the team currently sits outside the qualification spots.
Recent results in Group C have further complicated Nigeria's path. Benin Republic boosted their own chances with a narrow 1-0 victory over Zimbabwe, courtesy of Steve Mounié’s 77th-minute strike. This result moved Benin to eight points from six matches, leapfrogging Nigeria, who currently have seven points. Adding to the pressure, South Africa secured a crucial 3-0 victory over Lesotho, with goals from Mohau Nkota, Foster, and Oswin Appollis. This win extended South Africa’s lead at the top of Group C to nine points, placing them five points ahead of Nigeria, intensifying the challenge for the Super Eagles. The group remains wide open, with Rwanda, South Africa, Benin, and Nigeria all vying for the top spot.
To revive their campaign and take control of their destiny, the Super Eagles need maximum points from their upcoming fixtures. If results go their way, including a potential upset where Lesotho beats South Africa, and Nigeria secures victories against both Rwanda and South Africa, coupled with Benin dropping points, Chelle’s men could climb to the top of the group. However, Nigeria only has themselves to blame for their current predicament, having won just one game from six matches in the qualifying series, that sole victory coming away against Rwanda. They have notably failed to win a home game against Benin, Lesotho, or South Africa.
For the must-win clash against Rwanda, all 23 invited players are now in camp, and head coach Eric Chelle is expected to deploy a strong, fluid, and attacking 4-3-3 formation. The probable starting XI, as predicted, includes Stanley Nwabali in goal; a back four of Ola Aina, Calvin Bassey, Captain William Troost-Ekong, and Bruno Onyemaechi; a midfield trio of Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, and Alex Iwobi; and an attacking line spearheaded by Victor Osimhen, flanked by Samuel Chukwueze on the right and Moses Simon on the left. A significant absence from the expected lineup is star forward Ademola Lookman, who has been sidelined due to ongoing issues with his club, Atalanta, stemming from a failed transfer attempt and an unauthorized absence from training. Coach Chelle has likely opted for players who are in better form and have been consistently training with their respective clubs to ensure the team's best performance. The matches against Rwanda and South Africa will be a true test of Chelle's managerial prowess and the team's resolve.
