Super Eagles Triumph: Nigeria Dominates Tanzania in AFCON 2025 Opener

Nigeria secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Tanzania in their opening Group C match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Fes stadium in Morocco. This win was vital for the Super Eagles, especially after their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to restore national spirit and ease pressure on the team as they chase their fourth continental title.
The match saw Nigeria, under head coach Eric Chelle, deploy a strong starting lineup. Stanley Nwabali was in goal, with a defensive quartet of Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, and Zaidu Sanusi. In midfield, newly appointed captain Wilfred Ndidi paired with Alex Iwobi, supporting a four-man attack featuring Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams, and Victor Osimhen.
From the first whistle, Nigeria dominated possession and created numerous chances. However, they were repeatedly denied by Tanzania's debutant goalkeeper, Zuberi Foba, who made several crucial saves against efforts from players like Samuel Chukwueze and Akor Adams, with the latter also crashing a header off the crossbar. Victor Osimhen also saw his effort cleared off the line after dribbling the goalkeeper. The Super Eagles' persistence eventually paid off in the 36th minute when central defender Semi Ajayi powerfully headed home a crisp cross from Alex Iwobi, giving Nigeria a 1-0 lead going into halftime. This was Ajayi's second international goal for his country.
The second half began dramatically. Immediately after a VAR-disallowed goal for Osimhen, Tanzania stunned Nigeria with an equalizer in the 50th minute. Charles M'Mombwa capitalized on a lofted delivery, calmly slotting it past Stanley Nwabali, who had a questionable moment protesting an offside call that was not given. However, Nigeria's response was swift and decisive. Just two minutes later, Ademola Lookman restored the lead, cutting onto his left foot before arrowing a rising shot into the far corner for what would prove to be the match-winning goal.
Despite regaining the lead and securing the victory, head coach Eric Chelle admitted after the game that he made some poor decisions, stating, "I made a lot of choices; some were good, some were not good." Tactical substitutions, including bringing on Moses Simon and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru for Akor Adams and Samuel Chukwueze, helped restore midfield balance as Nigeria managed the game carefully to hold onto their advantage until the final whistle.
Several players stood out for their exceptional performances. Semi Ajayi, who was deservedly named Man of the Match, not only scored the opening goal at a crucial moment but also delivered a resolute defensive display with 100% pass accuracy, a blocked shot, and crucial defensive work. Alex Iwobi was a silent orchestrator and driving force in midfield, providing a match-high five key passes and assisting both Nigerian goals with his intelligent runs and vision. Ademola Lookman's match-winning goal showcased his skill and decision-making, as he created space and hammered a shot into the far corner. The winger was a constant threat, registering four shots in the match.
Conversely, some players had a less impactful outing and will need to improve for future matches. Samuel Chukwueze's performance was characterized by excessive dribbling and a tendency to hold onto the ball in promising positions where a simple pass could have been more effective. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali's protest during Tanzania's equalizer, coupled with an apparent lack of synchronization with his defense, raised concerns. Zaidu Sanusi also had a below-par performance, failing to make a significant impact with his four unsuccessful crosses from the left flank.
The 2-1 victory marked Nigeria's 15th opening-day win in AFCON history, while Tanzania continued their tournament history of losing their first match at the finals. This result places Nigeria in a strong position in Group C ahead of their upcoming fixtures against Tunisia and Uganda. While improvements are acknowledged as necessary, the winning start provides a much-needed confidence boost for Eric Chelle's side as they pursue continental glory.
