Super Eagles Star Durosinmi's Genk Goal Streak Sparks Transfer Frenzy!

Nigerian striker Rafiu Durosinmi has rapidly transformed into a significant asset for KRC Genk, quickly justifying his record-breaking €10.5 million transfer from Pisa in July. The 23-year-old, who signed a four-year contract until June 2030, has made an immediate impact by scoring in every one of his first four Belgian Pro League appearances, becoming the most expensive purchase in the club's history.

Durosinmi’s sensational start began on August 9, where he opened his Genk account with a debut header against Zulte Waregem. Rising above the defense to convert a cross from Junya Ito in the 39th minute, he earned the Man of the Match award despite Genk's 2-1 loss. Six days later, he continued his scoring streak against Westerlo, converting a 41st-minute penalty in a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory for Genk.

His third consecutive goal came on August 22 in a dramatic 4-4 draw against Royal Antwerp, a game where Genk initially led 4-1 before a late comeback by Antwerp. The scoring run culminated on Friday night against SK Beveren at the Cegeka Arena, where Durosinmi scored a ninth-minute penalty in Genk’s dominant 4-0 win, before being substituted in the 72nd minute. This impressive tally of four goals in four matches has propelled Genk to seven points and fourth place in the Belgian Pro League standings.

This stellar performance has garnered widespread attention and significantly increased his market value. Former Belgian striker Patrick Goots, speaking to Het Belang van Limburg, stated that Durosinmi’s value has already risen by several million euros in just a few weeks, making him a highly sought-after player. Goots emphasized Durosinmi's qualities as a "target man who can hold up the ball and provide calmness," noting that his ability to "put pressure on a defense" perfectly fits the role Genk sought when signing him.

Genk had initially described Durosinmi as a complete No. 9, highlighting his strength, ability to hold the ball, and involvement in team play, backed by his previous record of 35 goals and 10 assists in 86 games for Viktoria Plzeň. Beyond his attacking prowess, Durosinmi also contributes defensively, as he explained after the clean sheet against Beveren: “We stood compact and started pressing immediately. Everyone was willing to help each other. We really defended as a team.”

Despite acknowledging that "Life in Genk is difficult and different from what I am used to," Durosinmi has quickly settled in, crediting his teammates for their support: “Everyone helps each other and that makes it easier to settle in immediately and feel at home.” He has also set ambitious personal targets, aiming to finish high in the scoring chart and compete for the league’s Golden Boot, drawing comparisons to his Genk predecessor, Tolu Arokodare, who achieved similar success before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Durosinmi's explosive form is also making a strong case for his international career with the Super Eagles. A three-cap international, he featured in the 2026 Unity Cup against Zimbabwe and Jamaica, and in a friendly against Poland prior to the 2026 World Cup. With Nigeria's AFCON 2027 qualifiers set to begin in September, his consistent goal-scoring makes him a compelling candidate for a regular berth under coach Eric Chelle.

The bigger question surrounding Durosinmi's future is how long Genk can retain him. Patrick Goots believes that if he continues this impressive pace throughout the Belgian league season, a major sale by the end of the season will be difficult to avoid. For now, Durosinmi and Genk face their toughest test yet as they travel to face Anderlecht on Sunday (September 6).
