Super Eagles Secure Gritty Victory Over Tanzania in AFCON 2025 Clash

Nigeria commenced their campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco with a 2-1 victory over Tanzania's Taifa Stars in Fes. Despite being overwhelming favourites, the Super Eagles faced a determined Tanzanian side, particularly in the second half, that surprised many with their resilience.

The Super Eagles took the lead in the 35th minute when defender Semi Ajayi headed in an inswinging cross from Alex Iwobi. During this period, Nigeria dominated, creating numerous chances, with Akor Adams hitting the crossbar in the 11th minute and Victor Osimhen missing several opportunities. Tanzania's goalkeeper, Zuberi Foba, made several terrific saves, including parrying a Samuel Chukwueze piledriver and tipping an Osimhen shot over the bar, keeping the score at 1-0 at halftime.

The Taifa Stars, under coach Manuel Gomandi, displayed newfound grit in the second half, pushing forward aggressively. Gomandi expressed pride in his team's performance, stating they surprised many who expected them to 'pack the bus', a strategy against his philosophy. Tanzania equalized six minutes into the second half, in the 51st minute, when Charles M’Mombwa capitalized on a well-strung passing move from Novatus Miroshi inside the box. However, Nigeria quickly regained their lead just five minutes later, with Ademola Lookman scoring in the 56th minute. Lookman collected a pass from Alex Iwobi, cut through the Tanzanian defense, and unleashed an unstoppable shot. This was Iwobi's second assist of the night.

The game intensified after Nigeria's second goal, with Tanzania pressing for another equalizer. Substitute Kelvin John came close to scoring for the Taifa Stars, rolling a shot wide of the far post. Despite their efforts, Tanzania ultimately lost, leading their coach to believe they didn't deserve the defeat.

Former international Yakubu Aiyegbeni lauded the impressive performances of Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze for the Super Eagles. Iwobi, who featured for the entire game, provided both assists and was described as having one of his best performances for the national team. With 92 appearances and 10 goals, the 29-year-old Fulham star is Nigeria's most capped player. Chukwueze, who was replaced by Moses Simon in the 59th minute, also impressed and was noted for his creative contribution in midfield alongside Iwobi. Chukwueze has made 52 appearances for the Super Eagles, netting seven goals.

Looking ahead, Tanzania must secure a win against Uganda in their next Group C match to remain in the competition, as Uganda was beaten 3-1 by Tunisia in their opening game. Nigeria's next challenge will be against old foes Tunisia, a team that eliminated the Super Eagles from the 2021 AFCON with a 1-0 win in the second round.
