Strictly Shock: Tess Daly & Claudia Winkleman Dramatically Quit Amidst Show Scandals

Long-standing "Strictly Come Dancing" hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman have made a significant announcement, revealing their decision to step down from their presenting roles once the current series concludes. The beloved duo shared this news in a heartfelt joint statement across various social media platforms, expressing their deep affection for their time on the show. Their final joint on-screen appearance is slated for the "Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special," broadcasting on Christmas Day.
In their statement, Tess and Claudia articulated, "We have loved working as a duo and hosting Strictly has been an absolute dream. We were always going to leave together and now feels like the right time." They conveyed immense gratitude to the BBC and every individual involved in the production, calling them "the most brilliant team." They also shared a poignant sentiment, "We will cry when we say the last 'keep dancing' but we will continue to say it to each other. Just possibly in tracksuit bottoms at home while holding some pizza." This departure, reportedly decided weeks prior and communicated to senior executives, took many of the show's cast and crew by surprise when announced publicly.
Both presenters also shared individual farewell messages, shedding light on their personal reasons. Tess Daly, who has been with the programme since its launch 21 years ago, penned an emotional message on Instagram, honoring her former co-host, the late Bruce Forsyth. She indicated a desire to "bow out whilst on top," suggesting it was the opportune moment to hand over the reins. The mum-of-two concluded, "Strictly will forever hold a special place in my heart - but it does feel like the right time to hand over the reins." Insiders also suggested her desire for more weekends with family and friends.
Claudia Winkleman echoed a similar sentiment, captioning a snap of herself and Tess with a statement that included, "I've always believed it's best to leave a party before you're fully ready to go." She expressed confidence that the new hosts would be magnificent and looked forward to watching them elevate Strictly. Winkleman also paid tribute to Daly, stating, "As for Tess - I'm so so lucky I got to stand next to you. You're funny, kind, whip smart and a true friend and I love you." Claudia's professional profile has significantly soared, especially since hosting "The Traitors," a show for which she scooped her first BAFTA last year. This packed schedule and the success of newer projects are believed to be strong factors in her decision to clear space in her professional diary.
The duo's decision to leave simultaneously highlights a pact they had made, demonstrating their unity and strong friendship forged over their 11 years as main co-hosts. Tess has been a part of "Strictly" since its inception in 2004, co-hosting with Bruce Forsyth until 2014. Claudia joined the "Strictly" family in 2004, initially presenting "It Takes Two," then co-presenting the Sunday night results show with Daly from 2010 before they took over as the main programme presenters a decade ago.
While their public statements focused on positive experiences, speculation points to recent controversies surrounding "Strictly" as a contributing factor. The programme faced scrutiny over alleged drug use by two cast members, which led to an investigation by law firm Pinsent Masons. Furthermore, claims of bullying and harassment against former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, brought forward by Amanda Abbington, resulted in a BBC investigation and the implementation of new safeguards, including a chaperone for training sessions. EastEnders actor James Borthwick's suspension for using a disabled slur on set also added to the show's challenges. Despite Tess and Claudia never being personally implicated, the constant link to these incidents may have influenced their decision to depart, opting to "go out at the top" before further scandals could emerge. Their recent MBE honours for broadcasting contributions earlier this year might also have been seen as the perfect moment to step back.
The announcement elicited significant reactions from BBC executives and fellow personalities. Kate Phillips, Chief Content Officer for the BBC, expressed disbelief, calling it "the end of an era" and praising their integral role in the show's success. Suzy Lamb, Managing Director, Entertainment, BBC Studios, highlighted Tess's elegance and Claudia's wit, acknowledging their status as part of the "Strictly production family." Executive Producer Sarah James lauded them as the "best duo of presenters in the business" and "matriarchs of that family," emphasizing their deep bond with the show and team. Judge Motsi Mabuse declared she would "miss you so much!", while former "It Takes Two" presenters Zoe Ball and Rylan Clark also offered their best wishes, calling them "Absolute class act" and "pair of icons," respectively. The BBC has confirmed that replacement hosts will be announced "in due course," with names like Zoe Ball, Rylan Clark, Alan Carr, Alison Hammond, Holly Willoughby, and Anton Du Beke being discussed as potential candidates.
