Stevie Wonder Headlines Epic Minnie Riperton Tribute

Long before contemporary vocal powerhouses like Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande graced the airwaves, there was Minnie Riperton, a Chicago native celebrated for her extraordinary five-and-a-half-octave vocal range, famously including the whistle register. Her enduring musical legacy is now the focal point of a special tribute, 'Perfect Angel: The Definitive Minnie Riperton Tribute,' set to take place at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday, September 24.

This event not only commemorates the 50th anniversary of her seminal 1974 major-label album debut, 'Perfect Angel,' but also embraces the expansive, multi-genre scope of a vibrant career tragically cut short when she passed away from breast cancer at the age of 31 in 1979. The tribute boasts a stellar lineup of performers, including the recently announced Stevie Wonder, who was a close friend and collaborator. Other artists reimagining Riperton's deep-rooted repertoire of soul, pop, rock, and more include George Benson, Chanté Moore, Alex Isley, Aloe Blacc, säje, and Lizz Wright, alongside other surprise guests.

Robin Burgess, the tribute producer, highlighted the diversity of the assembled artists, stating they represent a 'hybrid of artistry' that reflects the broad appeal of Riperton's music across multiple genres, from a cappella groups to chanteuses and instrumentalists from folk, jazz, and R&B. The performances will be further enriched by stunning images of Riperton created by sculptor and immersive artist Andrew F. Scott.

Riperton's influence continues to resonate five decades later, evidenced by covers of her gold-certified single 'Lovin’ You' by artists such as Grande, SZA, Shanice, and Chloe. Her work has also been sampled by prominent hip-hop acts including The Roots, Q-Tip, and Arrested Development. Beyond 'Lovin’ You,' her catalog of six studio albums features other stand-out tracks like 'Inside My Love,' 'Memory Lane,' 'Lover and Friend,' and 'Here We Go.'

Her musical journey began with the girl group The Gems, followed by work as a backing vocalist at Chess Records for legends like Etta James, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters. She then became the lead singer for the psychedelic-soul band Rotary Connection before embarking on her solo career. Her first solo album, 'Come to My Garden,' was released in 1970, and she later signed with Epic Records, releasing 'Perfect Angel' in 1974. Stevie Wonder, an early admirer of her talent, co-produced 'Perfect Angel' under the pseudonym El Toro Negro and penned its title track. Riperton, in turn, lent her voice as a background singer on two of Wonder's classic albums: 'Fulfillingness’ First Finale' and 'Songs in the Key of Life.'

Wonder expressed his deep admiration, recalling Riperton as 'an extraordinary, vibrant person with an extra-special voice' and noting her 'positive energy that radiated throughout these sessions and throughout the rest of her life.' Richard Rudolph, Riperton’s husband and co-producer on 'Perfect Angel'—and father of their daughter, actress-comedian Maya Rudolph—shared insightful takeaways about her music and legacy.

He described their creative rapport as something they could best express in song, marveling at Minnie's unique artistry. Rudolph recounted the almost mystical impact of 'Lovin’ You' during a tour, where people would embrace as the song played, prompting them to push for its release as a single.

Rudolph also shed light on other significant tracks: 'Les Fleur' has seen renewed life through covers by Norah Jones and placements in commercials for major brands like Microsoft, Nike Jordan, and H&M. 'Inside My Love' faced controversy in 1975 due to its suggestive lyrics, leading to bans by some radio stations, though Rudolph noted the hypocrisy given a letter from a nun praising its spirituality.

He also highlighted collaborations on her debut 'Come to My Garden' with Charles Stepney, and on 'Adventures in Paradise' with Stewart Levine, Joe Sample, and Larry Carlton, emphasizing Minnie's ability to attract 'the best of the best.' A charming trivia note reveals that the melodic riff of Maya's name at the end of 'Lovin’ You' was a comforting sound for their baby daughter, allowing Riperton and Rudolph a brief moment of respite.

The enduring resonance of Minnie Riperton’s music, according to Richard Rudolph, lies in its authenticity. He emphasized that her music is 'real, not manufactured or pitch-corrected. It’s the real thing from her heart and soul. She was an original.' This genuine quality ensures that her music 'can endure and live forever,' warming his heart to see new generations dedicated to keeping her flame alive.
