State Street Walgreens closes, Springfield Pharmacy to replace it - NewsBreak
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Amid the closures of Walgreens stores nationwide, the old Walgreens location on State Street in Springfield has a new owner moving in.
Springfield’s Italian feast returns after 20 years
Very soon, locals will be able to go to Springfield pharmacy for their prescriptions and medications, but also their groceries.
The Springfield pharmacy signed a lease last week to open its third location, but with a market inside to shop for produce. In 2019, the first main street location opened, in 2023 for their Mercy Hospital location, and soon a third on State Street in Springfield, in place of an old Walgreens building.
The community near State Street, in particular, is known as a local food desert. This area is where residents don’t have as much access to affordable fruits and vegetables.
Tobias Billups with the pharmacy told 22News, “You can eat healthier, and have access to certain items, then you become healthier yourself, and it’s an underserved area and population, so I want to bring stuff to the people who need it. I’m a firm believer that if you take care of the community, the community will take care of us.”
You can expect a full-service pharmacy with deliveries, and in addition, that market will have fresh foods at competitive prices.
As for the timeline of when the new location will open its doors, the owner tells me that it will be in about 4 weeks.
