Springfield's Back! 'Simpsons' Movie Sequel Lands Summer 2027 Release Date

D’oh! The beloved Simpson family — Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie — is officially set to make a triumphant return to the big screen with a sequel to “The Simpsons Movie.” After a two-decade hiatus, the highly anticipated film is slated for release in theaters on July 23, 2027, under Disney’s 20th Century banner. This new installment will take the place of a previously scheduled untitled Marvel project, which has been removed from the studio’s calendar. Consequently, the Disney Marvel Cinematic Universe will see an adjusted schedule, with no new comic book film released between “Avengers: Doomsday” on December 18, 2026, and “Avengers: Secret Wars” on December 17, 2027.

While specific plot details for the “Simpsons” follow-up remain unconfirmed by Disney and 20th Century, the studios did share a cryptic poster on Instagram. The image features the iconic pink donut, accompanied by the intriguing tagline, “Homer’s coming back for seconds,” hinting at the central character’s potential culinary misadventures or perhaps a deeper narrative.

“The Simpsons,” created by the visionary Matt Groening, holds the prestigious title of the longest-running animated series and sitcom in television history. Set in the perpetually chaotic fictional town of Springfield, the show masterfully chronicles the day-to-day lives, escapades, and misadventures of the quintessential American family. The series has consistently captivated audiences globally and has already received a renewal through its monumental 40th season, which is scheduled to air during 2028 and 2029, further solidifying its enduring legacy.

The original “The Simpsons Movie” was a cinematic event when it premiered in July 2007. Directed by series veteran David Silverman, the film was a massive commercial success, raking in an impressive $536 million at the global box office against a modest $75 million budget. Its plot famously revolved around Springfield being confined under a colossal glass dome, a direct consequence of Homer’s accidental and catastrophic pollution of the town’s lake. Discussions surrounding a sequel have been ongoing for many years, but it is only now that these talks have finally materialized into a confirmed project.

Showrunner Matt Selman highlighted the critical role of streaming platforms, particularly Disney+, in sustaining the series’ cultural relevance and attracting new generations of fans. He noted that unlike in the past, when children watched the show on local TV, Disney+ allows for constant, on-demand access. Selman stated, “Being on Disney+ has been somewhat rejuvenating for us. Not that we realized we needed rejuvenation, but we appreciate it,” underscoring the platform's positive impact on “The Simpsons” continued success and broad appeal.
