The decisive goal came in the 106th minute of extra time by Ferran Torres, with following a header by Nico Williams.
Torres, unmarked and eight yards from goal, met Williams' pass with a left-footed rocket that was unsavable even for Argentina's magnificent goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez.
Despite the narrow scoreline, Spain's control over the match was absolute, and they launched 20 shots throughout the game, contrasting sharply with Argentina's meager two shots, neither of which was on target.
Argentina's offensive struggles were compounded by playing a man down for all of extra time, after Enzo Fernandez received a red card in stoppage time of regulation.
A historic performance was delivered by Emiliano Martinez from Argentina, who holds a record with 11 saves in the World Cup final.
His brilliance kept Argentina in the game for much longer than their play suggested, making crucial stops against shots from Lamine Yamal, Ferran Torres, Aymeric Laporte, and Nico Williams.
One particularly notable save occurred in the 93rd minute, where he laid out to deny Williams' header.
The 19-year-old sensation, Yamal, also had a dangerous free kick in the eighth minute of stoppage time that Martinez managed to shove away for his tenth save, preventing Spain from scoring before extra time.
Spain's relentless pressure was evident from the start, controlling 65% of the possession and taking all three shots and both corner kicks in the first half.
Yamal had an early chance in the fifth minute, but his close-range shot was saved by Martinez, but in the second half, Martinez was tested repeatedly, including a dangerous 67th-minute header from Torres and an 81st-minute attempt from Laporte.
Argentina's desperation mounted as the game progressed, failing to register their first shot until the 117th minute – an outside-the-box attempt by Lionel Messi that was blocked.
Their only other attempt came in the 121st minute from Giuliano Simeone, which sailed over the net, cementing their zero shots on goal for the entire match.
