South Africa's WTM London 2025 Double Triumph: Igniting a New Era for African Tourism

The conclusion of World Travel Market (WTM) London 2025 has sparked optimism for South Africa’s tourism sector, firmly positioning the country—and the wider African travel industry—on the global stage. From November 4th, a vibrant South African delegation impressed international partners, media, and industry professionals, showcasing the nation’s diverse and unique experiences, and reinforcing its status as a premier travel destination.
Central to this success were 22 dedicated South African stand sharers, representing a wide array of the country’s tourism and hospitality offerings. Their efforts transformed the South Africa stand into a bustling hub of activity, hosting meetings with trade partners, journalists, and key stakeholders. The engagement highlighted South Africa’s rich tourism portfolio—from wildlife safaris and adventure activities to cultural and culinary experiences—and signaled renewed confidence in the region’s travel potential.
The momentum peaked with South Africa securing two prestigious international awards. Kruger National Park was celebrated as the Top Destination for 2026 in the Lonely Planet Best in Travel Awards, an honor presented at London’s National Portrait Gallery. This recognition underscores the enduring global allure of South Africa’s legendary wildlife reserves, famed for their biodiversity, expansive landscapes, and exceptional hospitality. Additionally, South Africa won Gold: Most Desirable Destination for Nature and Wildlife at the Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards 2025, reflecting votes from thousands of international travelers and affirming the country’s outstanding natural beauty and adventure offerings.
These achievements go beyond accolades, signaling a shift in global perceptions and placing South Africa at the forefront of international travel aspirations. Darryl Erasmus, Acting CEO of South African Tourism, stated, “These recognitions reaffirm South Africa’s position as one of the world’s most inspiring and sought-after travel destinations. We are immensely proud of our teams and partners who continue to showcase South Africa’s beauty and diversity on the global stage.” International arrivals to South Africa rose 17% from January to September 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, reflecting successful marketing, strategic partnerships, and world-class visitor experiences.
For African travel professionals, South Africa’s dual triumphs offer a transformative blueprint. The country’s strategic approach—leveraging natural assets, investing in product development, and nurturing industry partnerships—demonstrates how sub-Saharan markets can compete effectively on the global stage. South Africa’s success also underscores the growing demand among travelers for destinations that combine adventure, wildlife encounters, and cultural immersion, highlighting the value of sustainability, community engagement, and authentic experiences.
As the post-WTM period unfolds, the challenge—and opportunity—for Africa’s tourism sector is to sustain momentum. Investments in training programs, infrastructure, and sophisticated brand positioning will be crucial to maintain international interest and drive continued growth. South African Tourism’s achievements at WTM London 2025 exemplify the power of vision, collaboration, and innovative strategy, proving that African destinations can not only compete globally but excel. With the continent’s rich landscapes, vibrant cultures, and renowned hospitality, Africa is poised to play a central role in the journeys of tomorrow.
