South Africa Reels From Taxi Alliance Chairperson's Murder
The Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has conveyed her profound shock and deep sorrow regarding the brutal assassination of Thamsanqa Moyo, the esteemed Gauteng Chairperson of the National Taxi Alliance (NTA). Moyo tragically lost his life after being shot while driving along the Soweto highway on Thursday, in an incident that has sent shockwaves through the province's transport sector.
In an official statement, MEC Diale-Tlabela vehemently condemned the senseless act of violence, highlighting the immense loss it represents. She emphasized that the killing has not only deprived the taxi industry of a dedicated and influential leader but has also inflicted a grievous wound upon his family, colleagues, and the wider transport community in Gauteng. The MEC's condemnation underscored the severity of the crime and its detrimental impact on efforts to foster stability within the crucial taxi sector.
Diale-Tlabela articulated the significance of Moyo's contributions, stating, "This is a devastating loss to the taxi industry and to Gauteng as a whole. Moyo was a leader who played an important role in shaping dialogue within the industry and promoting stability. His untimely death is a blow to ongoing efforts to build peace, unity, and sustainable solutions within the taxi sector." Her words reflected the high regard in which Moyo was held and the critical role he played in navigating complex issues within the industry.
Extending her heartfelt condolences, the MEC reached out to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, as well as the leadership and members of the NTA, offering solace during this difficult period. Furthermore, she issued a strong appeal to law enforcement agencies, urging them to spare no effort in their investigations to ensure that all individuals responsible for this heinous crime are swiftly apprehended and brought to justice. This call underscores the government's commitment to upholding the rule of law and combating violence.
MEC Diale-Tlabela also called for calm, restraint, and full cooperation from all stakeholders as the investigations progress. "We cannot allow criminal elements to derail progress in the taxi industry through acts of intimidation and violence," she asserted, reinforcing the provincial government's resolve to prevent such acts from undermining the sector's development. She reiterated the provincial government's unwavering commitment to collaborating with all industry stakeholders to cultivate a transport system in Gauteng that is characterized by safety, reliability, and peace. To personally extend support and condolences, the MEC is scheduled to visit Moyo's family on Friday, a gesture aimed at honoring his memory and standing in solidarity with his loved ones during their time of bereavement.
