South Africa Pioneers Electronic Travel Authorisation System
President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to launch South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) on August 12, 2026, marking a significant step in modernizing the country's immigration system. This digital platform combines advanced technology to enhance border security, streamline travel, and boost South Africa's appeal for tourism, business, and investment.President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to inaugurate South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, at OR Tambo International Airport. This event signifies a pivotal advancement in the government's strategy to digitally transform and modernize the nation's immigration framework, following its successful trial during South Africa's G20 Presidency.
The ETA is envisioned as the core element of South Africa's contemporary digital immigration system and the leading initiative within the department's comprehensive digital transformation agenda. The Presidency stated that the ETA integrates sophisticated biometric verification, machine learning capabilities, and an enhanced Electronic Movement Control System (eMCS 2.0). This integration establishes a modern digital immigration ecosystem designed to bolster border security while simultaneously making travel to South Africa more expeditious, streamlined, and secure for bona fide travelers.
This digital platform is projected to elevate South Africa's standing as an attractive destination for tourism, business, and investment. Concurrently, it aims to boost the efficiency and security of border management operations. The government emphasized that this reform will strengthen the country's competitive edge in these sectors, supporting more effective and secure border management practices.
The official launch of the ETA is also a significant milestone in the digital transformation journey of both the Department of Home Affairs and the Border Management Authority (BMA). It underscores the government's steadfast commitment to leveraging technology to improve public service delivery, protect national security interests, and stimulate economic expansion.
President Ramaphosa will be joined by the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, for the official unveiling. The launch ceremony will further feature a live demonstration of the ETA system and a comprehensive guided tour led by the Border Management Authority Commissioner, Dr Michael Masiapato.
