South Africa Mourns Tragic Crash: 16 Lives Lost

The nation is mourning after a tragic bus crash in the early hours of Thursday on the N1 near Gulfstream Garage in the Western Cape claimed the lives of 16 people. The Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa have extended their deepest condolences to the grieving families who lost loved ones in this devastating incident.

According to initial reports, the bus was transporting a total of 78 passengers, including several children, on a long-distance journey from Cape Town to Idutywa in the Eastern Cape. The accident, which allegedly occurred when the bus overturned, resulted in 16 fatalities and left 20 occupants injured. Forty-three other passengers, remarkably, refused medical treatment at the scene.

Those who sustained injuries in the crash were promptly transported to Worcester Hospital for urgent medical attention. Minister Creecy and Deputy Minister Hlengwa have conveyed their heartfelt wishes for a speedy and full recovery to all individuals who were injured in the incident, emphasizing the government's concern for their well-being.

In response to the tragedy, the ministers have taken immediate action to ensure comprehensive support and a thorough investigation. They have directed the Road Accident Fund (RAF) to provide essential support and assistance to both the bereaved families and all those who were injured. This directive aims to alleviate some of the burdens faced by the victims and their families during this difficult time.

Furthermore, Minister Creecy and Deputy Minister Hlengwa have instructed the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to launch a full-scale investigation into the exact cause of the crash. The RTMC will work in close collaboration with local authorities to ascertain all contributing factors. A preliminary investigation report is anticipated within 48 hours of the RTMC commencing its inquiry, underscoring the urgency with which the government is addressing this serious road safety concern.
