Sophie Turner Unleashes Horrifying Truths of 'Young Actress World' in New Thriller

The latest film "Trust," directed by actress Carlson Young and starring Sophie Turner as Lauren, delves into profound questions of trust and betrayal as a young actress finds her life upended by a hacking scandal. Forced into seclusion at a remote cabin, Lauren becomes the target of attacks, leading her to confront betrayal from someone she once trusted. The film explores critical themes such as the intense scrutiny faced by young actresses, the vulnerability of children within the entertainment industry, and the profound loss of privacy accompanying fame, alongside the pervasive downsides of technology and social media.
Sophie Turner and Carlson Young discussed their collaborative process, highlighting their "kindred spirit" connection. Both having shared experiences in the "young actress world," they found their personal lives and stories deeply informed the character of Lauren, making her portrayal more fleshed out and real. Young emphasized the magical nature of working with Turner, especially when tackling such heavy material, noting their spiritual and physical synchronicity.
A significant focus of "Trust" is the intertwining of privacy and technology. Young elaborated on the concept of an "online persona" versus real-life experience, viewing social media as merely the surface level of modern privacy challenges. She stressed the importance of depicting technology as an undeniable part of everyday life, influencing Lauren's journey inward. Turner added that it would have been unrealistic to show Lauren not immediately connecting to Wi-Fi, underscoring the ubiquity of online connectivity.
Turner also shared insights into her character's transformative arc, particularly Lauren's journey to reclaim her power and agency. She described the experience as incredibly cathartic, allowing her to channel personal industry experiences into the role. Unlike many thrillers that end on cliffhangers or tragic notes, "Trust" deliberately provides Lauren with a "fairly nice ending," offering vindication and a message of empowerment. This choice was crucial for both the character and the film's intended audience, aiming for a feeling of strength rather than sadness.
Director Carlson Young revealed her cinematic inspirations for "Trust," citing Ridley Scott's "Alien" and the Coen Brothers' "Fargo." The "Alien" component resonated with the theme of isolation and the unsettling feeling of something changing within, a metaphor Young connected to Lauren's pregnancy. "Fargo" contributed to the film's unique tonal blend, where ancillary characters brought a comedic texture, particularly in scenes depicting a "comedy of errors" in a violent way, ultimately serving to mock predators. Young nurtured this comedic element during editing, recognizing its potential to satirize antagonists effectively.
The role demanded significant physical preparation from Sophie Turner, including an unexpected underwater scene requiring freediving training. Turner expressed immense enjoyment in undertaking such a physically strenuous role, a departure from her typically sedentary characters. She noted a mirroring effect, as her growing physical capabilities aligned with Lauren's increasing sense of empowerment throughout the film. Learning new skills like freediving was a fulfilling experience, making her realize her capabilities were far greater than she previously thought.
Looking ahead, Turner also teased her upcoming Gothic horror film, "The Dreadful," where she reunites with her "Game of Thrones" co-star Kit Harington. She revealed that the film is loosely based on the acclaimed Japanese film "Onibaba" and shares a vibe akin to "The Green Knight" – supernatural, weird, and genuinely scary. Working with Harington again was a "joy" and felt like reuniting with a "big brother," making the project a delightful excuse for them to spend time together.
