The Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Alhaji Tukur Bala Bodinga, has clarified that the legislature’s support for Governor Ahmed Aliyu is not conditional, but rather grounded in the governor’s developmental achievements and performance.
Speaking during an assessment of the Assembly’s performance over the past two years, Bodinga emphasized that the lawmakers have consistently backed initiatives that align with the interests and progress of the state.
“Our support for the governor is not blind. But what do you expect when he is performing excellently?” Bodinga remarked.
The Speaker noted that Governor Aliyu executed over 250 projects in 2024 alone, ranging from infrastructure to social welfare programmes.
“The governor has constructed roads and housing units, and has initiated various empowerment schemes, especially targeting the underprivileged,” he said.
Highlighting one of the key interventions, Bodinga pointed to the Katin Sauki (Buy Cheap Shop) initiative, which offers subsidized food items to public servants and pensioners. “This initiative reflects the governor’s compassion for the poor. Food items in the shop are sold at a 20 percent discount. How can we, in good conscience, oppose such a programme?” he stated.
On security, the Speaker lauded the governor’s efforts, including the acquisition of over 140 operational vehicles and motorcycles, as well as the construction of a military base in Illela to bolster efforts against banditry.
Bodinga further revealed that the Assembly is preparing to pass a vote of confidence on Governor Aliyu, citing his commitment to delivering democratic dividends since assuming office. He also disclosed plans to recommend the governor for an automatic ticket under the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 gubernatorial election.
“The governor has earned the trust of the people, and we believe he deserves another term,” he concluded
