Smurfs 2025 Flops: Franchise Records Lowest Opening Day Box Office

The animated musical film, *Smurfs*, a reported reboot of the Smurfs film series, has made its theatrical debut through Paramount Pictures. Despite previous Sony-produced live-action animated films in the franchise gaining considerable popularity, this latest installment has encountered a lackluster reception, recording the lowest opening day collection at the North American box office for the franchise. The film has received largely mixed to negative reviews, as indicated by its critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds a mere 21% on the Tomatometer. Critics described the film as "Antic and zany without being particularly fun," and concluded it "just isn’t the smurfest tool in the shed." Audience sentiment was also moderate, with an average of 68% on the popcorn meter.

According to data from Box Office Mojo, *Smurfs* garnered just $4 million on its opening day in North America, marking the lowest opening day collection in the history of the Smurfs franchise. This performance contrasts sharply with the opening day collections of its predecessors: *The Smurfs* (2011) opened with $13.3 million, *The Smurfs 2* (2013) with $5.2 million, and *Smurfs: The Lost Village* (2017) with $4.1 million. The 2025 reboot barely surpassed the opening of *Smurfs: The Lost Village*, which ultimately secured $45.0 million domestically and $197.2 million worldwide. Despite featuring an ensemble voice cast including prominent names such as James Corden, Nick Offerman, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Jimmy Kimmel, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Kurt Russell, and John Goodman, the film failed to make a significant impact in its opening week. Global star Rihanna lends her voice to the character of Smurfette.

The narrative of the new *Smurfs* movie centers on a perilous adventure following the kidnapping of Papa Smurf by the sinister wizards Razamel and Gargamel. In response, Smurfette assumes a leadership role, guiding the Smurfs on a daring rescue mission that takes them into the real world. During their journey, they encounter new allies and embark on a path of self-discovery, ultimately uncovering the true meaning of their destiny as they fight to save not only Papa Smurf but the entire universe. The film officially premiered on July 18.
