MORENO VALLEY — Firefighters Saturday held a vegetation fire north of Moreno Valley, between Riverside and San Bernardino counties, to 83 acres.

The Smiley fire was reported at 2:36 p.m. Saturday in an unincorporated area at San Timoteo Canyon Road and Smiley Boulevard, according to the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.

The forward progress of the fire was reported stopped at 5:44 p.m.

No injuries or structure damage were reported.

At 6:20 p.m., officials reported firefighters were working in steep terrain to extend containment lines in steep terrain. Containment was reported at 30%.

Firefighters from Cal Fire in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and the Redlands Fire Department planned to spend several hours clearing vegetation around the fire and putting out hot spots, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
