Showdown Confirmed! Jake Paul vs. 'Tank' Davis Set for Nov. 14 Atlanta Boxing Blockbuster!
A surprising announcement has shaken the combat sports world: Jake Paul, the YouTuber-turned-prizefighter, is set to face WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis. This highly anticipated bout is scheduled for Friday, November 14, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta and will be streamed live globally on Netflix. The news came unexpectedly, as Paul had previously been linked to a heavyweight clash with former unified champion Anthony Joshua, and Davis was rumored for a rematch with Lamont Roach Jr. following their majority draw in March. This high-profile matchup between a 135-pound world champion and a cruiserweight who last fought at 200 pounds immediately raised questions about its origins and implications.
The genesis of this fight traces back to August 2021, when Jake Paul unveiled a "hit list" of desired opponents, which notably included Gervonta Davis. At that time, Paul’s boxing record stood at 3-0. Since then, he has fought three individuals from that list, and Davis will be the fourth. While many of these names seemed out of reach initially due to Paul's inexperience, his growing stature in boxing has transformed him into a desirable opponent, largely due to the immense visibility and financial opportunities he brings. Davis, too, has long expressed interest in facing Paul, engaging in social media exchanges. Earlier negotiations for a fight between them were put on hold when Davis had his surprising draw with Roach in March. However, Davis ultimately opted for the significantly higher payday against Paul, setting aside the Roach rematch for now.
Both sides recognize the immense cultural event this fight represents. Jake Paul is undeniably one of boxing's biggest attractions, and Gervonta Davis consistently proves to be a box office draw. Despite the significant size difference, Paul’s team believes the bout offers significant financial upside, echoing the success of the 2017 crossover fight between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Most Valuable Promotions, co-founded by Paul, will produce the event for Netflix, aiming for a massive global audience. As a prizefight, the motivation is clear: to maximize earnings from a high-profile spectacle.
The nature of the fight, particularly given the substantial weight disparity, is a key point of discussion. While Paul and Davis are expected to compete fiercely, it is likely to be an exhibition rather than a sanctioned professional boxing match. Most Valuable Promotions co-founder Nakisa Bidarian stated that the contracted weight and number of rounds are still being negotiated. The Georgia State Athletic Commission will ultimately determine the rules and whether it is officially sanctioned. Exhibition matches offer greater flexibility in rules regarding round number and length, glove size, and referee selection. Crucially, they do not declare a winner nor count towards a fighter's professional record, serving purely as entertainment.
Comparisons have been drawn to the 2021 exhibition between Logan Paul and Floyd Mayweather Jr. While both feature significant weight disparities and a social media influencer against a professional boxer, there are key differences. Jake Paul is generally considered a more skilled boxer than his brother Logan, and Davis is still in his prime, unlike the retired Mayweather. There's a tangible element of bad blood between Jake Paul and Davis, and a loss would significantly impact "Tank’s" professional career. For Jake Paul, a strong performance is crucial for his aspirations of being taken seriously in the boxing world, especially considering his future plans.
Regarding Jake Paul’s potential fight with Anthony Joshua, MVP clarified that it was never expected to occur in 2025. Discussions for a heavyweight clash between Paul and Joshua in 2026 are ongoing, provided terms can be agreed upon. However, the outcome of the Paul-Davis fight could alter these plans. If Davis were to knock out Paul, demand for a Paul-Joshua fight might diminish, as Bidarian noted. Paul, for his part, has confidently stated his intention to defeat Davis before moving on to Joshua. Meanwhile, Joshua's promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed Joshua is recovering from elbow surgery and aims to fight again before the end of 2025, with Tony Yoka as a potential opponent.
As for the Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach Jr. rematch, it remains a possibility, albeit not immediately. Roach had been ready for the rematch for months, with August being a rumored date. However, Davis ultimately chose the Paul fight for its greater financial reward, never signing the contract for the Roach rematch. Sources indicate Roach plans to return to the ring this fall against an opponent yet to be determined. If both Davis and Roach emerge victorious and unharmed from their respective next fights, the rematch could potentially be revisited in early 2026. Lastly, it was confirmed that Davis's misdemeanor battery charge, stemming from an alleged domestic incident on Father's Day, was dismissed earlier this month.
