Shockwaves in EV Market: Ford Reportedly Ditching F-150 Lightning!

The Ford F-150 Lightning, an electric pickup truck initially celebrated as a pivotal moment for the brand, is reportedly operating as a 'loss leader' when compared to its traditional, non-electric F-150 counterpart. Production of the F-150 Lightning has been halted following a fire at a key aluminum supplier, prompting Ford to consider whether to bring assembly back online at all.

This uncertainty surrounding the F-150 Lightning stands in stark contrast to Ford's conventional vehicle production, where a third shift was recently added for the F-150 and Super Duty lines. While no definitive decision has been made regarding the Lightning's future, a new report from the Wall Street Journal indicates that Ford is contemplating replacing the electric truck at its Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, with new vehicles. These potential replacements would be derived from the Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, which CEO Jim Farley unveiled in August.

The UEV platform is designed to facilitate the production of more affordable electric vehicles, including a projected $30,000 electric truck. This affordability is intended to be achieved through 'engineering cleverness' and a streamlined development process focused on reducing parts count, complexity, and overall vehicle weight. The potential discontinuation of the F-150 Lightning, if it occurs, would not be the first high-profile product ended under CEO Farley's leadership; other recently canceled EV programs include a three-row electric SUV, which was scrapped in 2024 in favor of increasing hybrid vehicle production. Under Farley's tenure, Ford's U.S. lineup has also seen a reduction, now comprising just 14 offerings, predominantly two-row SUVs and pickup trucks. Ford has been contacted for comment, with updates expected as more information becomes available.
