The Botswana Football Association (BFA) has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the Botswana Premier League's (BFL) operational handling, despite having granted it full autonomy. Upon their ascent to leadership, the BFA's National Executive Committee (NEC) made a deliberate decision to empower the Botswana Football League with complete independence. This show of goodwill was further underscored by overturning a standing resolution that would have reduced the number of elite teams to 12, instead opting to maintain the 16-team format. These significant structural concessions were intentionally designed to provide the BFL with the best possible platform to manage its affairs successfully and foster a professional environment.
However, this initial trust has eroded, transforming into clear disappointment. The BFA NEC now openly condemns the BFL's daily operational handling, as well as the behavior and character displayed by its directors and shareholders. Babitseng stated that the current state of the BFL is far from the professional leadership the mother body envisioned when granting autonomy. He firmly reminded the BFL leadership that despite holding two voting rights within the football structures, this minor administrative leverage does not grant them the freedom to conduct affairs as they wish, particularly since the Premier League remains the primary face of Botswana football.
The escalating situation has garnered high-level regulatory scrutiny, prompting the BFA to consider disciplinary or corrective intervention. President Babitseng confirmed that he is awaiting a comprehensive report from the Chief Executive Officer and Maokaneng Bontshetshe, both of whom serve on the BFL board. Furthermore, the BFA president has received official correspondence from the Botswana National Sport Commission regarding the ongoing instability. The BFA NEC is resolute and prepared to take definitive action once the full board reports are delivered, signaling that the mother body will no longer tolerate governance failures that compromise the integrity of local football.
