Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has confirmed his intention to stand for the FIFA presidency in next year’s election, becoming the first candidate to publicly challenge the incumbent, Gianni Infantino. Vega, 55, who also played for Celtic and Watford and represented Switzerland as a centre-back, transitioned into the finance sector after ending his playing career in 2004.

Vega stated his primary aim is to reunite the global football family, implement meaningful and lasting reforms, modernize FIFA for the 21st century, restore stability and credibility, and rebuild trust. He emphasized that his life experiences have prepared him to serve the game. In an extensive 11-page manifesto, Vega argued that football does not belong to presidents, confederations, or administrators. Instead, he believes it belongs to its true stakeholders: players, coaches, referees, supporters, volunteers, clubs, leagues, associations, communities, every child discovering the game, every professional representing a nation, and the billions of fans worldwide.

He further added that football must always come first, but warned that division has fractured the football family.
