Shocking Truth: Redick Blasts Lakers for Apparent Lack of Effort and Passion

The Los Angeles Lakers experienced a dismal Christmas Day, succumbing to a lopsided 119-96 loss against the Houston Rockets. This defeat marked their third straight and sixth in their past ten games, prompting severe criticism from coach JJ Redick, who openly questioned his team's professionalism and commitment.
Redick did not mince words, stating, "We don't care enough right now. And that's the part that bothers you a lot. We don't care enough to do the things that are necessary. We don't care enough to be a professional." He emphasized the urgency of addressing the team's alarming downturn, scheduling an "uncomfortable" practice and meeting for Saturday, declaring, "I'm not doing another 53 games like this."
The game itself was largely uncompetitive from the outset, with the Rockets establishing a 14-point lead in the first quarter and maintaining a double-digit advantage throughout the entire second half. Redick attributed the poor performance to a lack of "effort and execution," noting that the team performs well when these elements are high, but becomes a "terrible basketball team" when they are absent.
Adding to the team's struggles, Luka Doncic, returning from a left calf contusion, recorded a team-worst six turnovers, including three in the opening minutes. The Lakers also lost Austin Reaves at halftime due to a pre-existing left calf injury, which will require an MRI. Redick reiterated his previous critiques from a loss against the Phoenix Suns, pointing to specific, unnamed players who are consistently unprepared and unwilling to make the necessary choices for the team's strategy.
Houston dominated the boards, outrebounding Los Angeles 48-25, with a significant 17 offensive rebounds, leading to more scoring opportunities. This loss continued a troubling trend for the Lakers, as all ten of their losses this season have been by ten or more points.
Following the game, Doncic acknowledged the team's dire situation, stating, "I don't know what has to change, but definitely something needs to change. Think we [were] blown out the last three games. It definitely looks, like, terrible. We got to figure out, that's the thing we have [to do]. ... We just got to talk about it. Everybody got to talk about it. I know JJ said it's going to be uncomfortable [for everybody]. As they should be." He also took personal responsibility, adding, "Everybody has got to give better effort, starting with me."
LeBron James scored 18 points, but his plus-minus of -33 in 34 minutes marked his worst performance as a Laker and third worst in his career. James, along with Rui Hachimura and Marcus Smart, who started the second half in Reaves' place, declined to speak with reporters after the game.
Instead, role players Jake LaRavia and Jarred Vanderbilt addressed the media. LaRavia suggested a "disconnect" within the team, emphasizing the need to get back on track. Vanderbilt, who had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench and a team-best plus-5 in 27 minutes, articulated that the team is at a critical juncture. He stressed the importance of communication and receptiveness to criticism, noting, "Ultimately, certain stuff just needs to be said and certain stuff needs to be done and we got to be able to communicate with each other and be receptive of it, whether it's criticism or, we got to have them hard conversations. ... We don't want this to keep lingering. And right now it's three in a row, but we don't want it to keep going the wrong direction."
