The incident occurred when three royal aides, preparing for King Charles and Queen Camilla's trip to Canada for the late Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebrations, left a bag labeled 'HRH The Duchess of Cornwall' unattended in an unlocked car at Beaconsfield Services off Junction 2 of the M40 motorway in Buckinghamshire. A local gang opportunistically stole the bag while one aide took a cigarette break and the other two went for coffees.

Jobson's account details that MI5 was quickly deployed and, utilizing nearby CCTV, managed to track down the thieves and recover the jewels within hours.
