Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has recently converted to Islam, a significant personal development that occurred while he was in Doha, Qatar. The Nigerian defender recited the Shahada, the two testimonies of faith, a moment captured in a video that has since circulated widely on social media platforms. According to a report by Al-Arab, Troost-Ekong made his declaration of conversion while playing for Qatar Stars League club Al-Ahli. The footage distinctly shows the 33-year-old performing the Shahada in Arabic, marking a profound personal milestone away from his professional football endeavors. While his conversion has gained public attention, the Qatari reports did not provide details regarding when Troost-Ekong began exploring Islam or the specific influences behind his decision.

Born in Haarlem, Netherlands, on September 1, 1993, to a Nigerian father and a Dutch mother, Troost-Ekong's football journey began in the youth systems of renowned English clubs Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur. He then launched his senior career with FC Groningen in 2013, which led him through various European leagues, including stints with FC Dordrecht, Belgian club Gent, and Norway's FK Haugesund. In 2017, he moved to Turkish side Bursaspor, followed by a transfer to Italian Serie A club Udinese in August 2018, where he played for two seasons. His career continued with Watford, whom he joined in September 2020, and included a loan spell at Salernitana in Italy. Before his recent moves to the Middle East, he joined Greek club PAOK in 2023 and was part of the squad that secured the Greek Super League title in the 2023/24 season. His journey to the Middle East saw him join Al-Kholood in Saudi Arabia in August 2024, followed by a move to Al-Ahli in Qatar in January 2026. Troost-Ekong's illustrious international career with the Nigeria Super Eagles commenced on June 13, 2015, in an AFCON qualifier against Chad. He accumulated an impressive 83 senior caps and scored eight goals before announcing his retirement from international football in 2025. During his time with the national team, he represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments. He also earned a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games and another at the 2019 AFCON.
