Shocking Murder: University Bursar Gunned Down in Zamfara

Nasiru Marafa, the Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has been tragically shot dead in Zamfara State. The university officially confirmed his death in a statement released on Sunday by its registrar and secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi. The statement detailed that Marafa was reportedly shot on Sunday, September 6, while he was returning from Gusau.

Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, as he was identified, had been appointed as the Bursar of NOUN in September 2022. Prior to this significant role, he had dedicated his service to the university in various capacities, contributing significantly to its administration.

His untimely death has sent shockwaves through the entire university community, deeply affecting staff, students, and colleagues. In its statement, NOUN extended its heartfelt condolences to Marafa's grieving family, relatives, friends, and colleagues, acknowledging the profound loss.

In remembrance and prayer, NOUN subsequently announced that a Janaza Ga’ib (funeral prayer in absentia) would be held for Nasiru Marafa. This special prayer was scheduled for Monday, September 7, immediately following the 1:30 pm Zuhr prayer at the university’s Jumaat Mosque located in Jabi, Abuja. The university called upon family members, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers to attend the prayer, offering a collective moment of remembrance and supplication for the deceased.

Distinguished figures were expected to be present at the Janaza Ga’ib prayer, including former Bauchi State Governor and current chairman of the NOUN Governing Council, Isa Yuguda. Additionally, Vice-Chancellor Oji Uduma was anticipated to be in attendance to offer condolences and support to the Muslim community during this period of mourning.
