The Presidency has accused Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), of employing a new political strategy in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. This strategy, according to the Presidency, involves repeatedly making claims that his life is under threat. Daniel Bwala, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, articulated this allegation in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday.
Bwala's claims were made in response to Obi's recent statements in Berlin, Germany. During his remarks, the former Anambra State governor alleged that there was an attempt on his life during a planned visit to Benue State in April 2025. Bwala vehemently dismissed Obi's accusation, characterizing it as part of a recurring pattern of similar allegations designed to generate public sympathy and political leverage. He explicitly stated, "The desperation of Peter Obi is palpable. He recently travelled to Europe and was quoted to have alleged that the Governor of Benue wanted to kill him. Imagine lies from someone who said he wants to govern a country like Nigeria."
Furthermore, the presidential aide referenced a previous controversy involving Obi. He pointed to an incident where Obi allegedly made false accusations against airport officials, claiming intimidation, when in fact he was accused of violating airport traffic regulations. Bwala linked these past events to Obi's current claims, suggesting a calculated effort to manipulate public sentiment. He elaborated, "The other day he falsely accused airport officials of threatening his life when in fact he violated airport traffic rules."
Bwala concluded by alleging that Obi's recent pronouncements about threats to his life are strategically intended to mobilize and rally members of the "Obidient Movement" against political opponents. He stated, "Lately his newfound allegation on life may appear to be his strategy to use his Obidient movement to threaten people’s lives like they have been doing on us," implying a deeper political motive behind the life threat claims.
