Shock Royal Succession: Who Takes the Duke of York Title Post-Scandal?

Prince Andrew has announced his decision to relinquish his remaining royal titles and role with immediate effect, including his notable Duke of York title. This significant move was confirmed in a statement where he addressed the ongoing accusations against him, acknowledging that they distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. He stated, “In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.”
Despite Andrew's public decision to give up his titles, it is important to note that they still remain extant and will simply not be used in public. The Duke of York title, which held a very special place in the late Queen Elizabeth's heart, has unfortunately been tainted by her son's numerous scandals and his association with Jeffrey Epstein. Unless he is officially stripped of his Dukedom, the title will be retained in private by Andrew until his death.
Historically, the Duke of York title has been traditionally conferred upon the second son of the monarch. Consequently, should Prince William ascend the throne and the title not be actively held, Prince Louis could potentially be granted it when he comes of age or chooses to marry. The late Queen's grandfather, King George V, and her father, King George VI, both held the title of Duke of York before their reigns. The former monarch was known as Princess Elizabeth of York until her father became King in 1936, solidifying the sentimental connections the late Queen held to this specific title.
In his statement issued via Buckingham Palace, Andrew further clarified his position: “I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.” He continued, “With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”
