Shock Exit: Olympic Star Jenny Simpson Retires Following Cardiac Arrest

Olympic bronze medalist and former world champion Jenny Simpson has made a somber announcement, stating that she will never run again following a severe medical incident in June. The decision stems from a diagnosis of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC), an inherited heart condition that profoundly impacts heart muscle integrity.

Simpson, 39, experienced a sudden cardiac arrest on June 21 while actively participating in a pop-up event in North Carolina, where she was pacing a mile group. The critical situation required immediate intervention, as she received CPR and an automated external defibrillator (AED) on-site. Subsequently, she was transported to UNC Rex Hospital, where she endured a second cardiac arrest, highlighting the severity of her condition.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Simpson elaborated on her diagnosis. She explained that ARVC is a condition where heart muscle cells progressively die and are replaced by scar tissue, rendering any return to running extremely perilous. Her statement, “My heart was severely injured and stunned,” underscored the profound impact the cardiac events had on her health and ability to continue her athletic pursuits.

Prior to this life-altering diagnosis, Simpson had already concluded her illustrious competitive racing career after the 2024 season. Her notable achievements include winning the 1500m gold medal at the 2011 World Championships and securing a bronze medal in the same event at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Additionally, she earned silver medals at both the 2013 and 2017 World Championships in the 1500m, cementing her legacy as a formidable presence in middle-distance running.
