Shock Defection: Senator Buba Abandons APC Amidst Internal Turmoil

Senator Shehu Buba Umar, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and transitioned to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP). This significant political move, announced on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Comrade Sabo Mohammed, was driven by deep-seated concerns regarding alleged deficiencies in internal democracy and a perceived marginalisation of genuine members within the ruling APC.

The decision was formalized on Sunday, May 24, 2026, following extensive consultations with a broad spectrum of political associates, stakeholders, youth groups, women's organizations, and supporters across Bauchi State. This defection follows Senator Buba's earlier withdrawal from the APC governorship primary election in Bauchi State on May 20, where he had cited blatant violations of the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and fundamental democratic principles.

In explaining his departure, Senator Buba vehemently accused the APC of lacking fairness and robust internal democracy, asserting that authentic party members and grassroots supporters were increasingly being sidelined in crucial decision-making processes. He lauded the PRP as a principled platform, highlighting its foundational commitment to justice, accountability, transparency, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership. He further emphasized the PRP's unwavering dedication to democratic values and constitutional governance.

Senator Buba articulated that his shift to the PRP was primarily motivated by an imperative to bolster democratic governance, safeguard the interests of ordinary citizens, and provide genuinely responsive leadership to the populace of Bauchi State. He passionately declared that "Democracy can only thrive where political parties uphold fairness, equal opportunity, internal democracy, and active participation of members in decision-making processes."

Furthermore, he underscored the urgent necessity for patriotic leaders nationwide to coalesce in addressing pressing national challenges such as pervasive poverty, escalating unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and pervasive poor governance. He firmly believes that "Our people deserve better governance, better opportunities, and leadership that truly listens to their concerns. Politics should be about service to humanity, justice, development, and improving the living conditions of the masses."

The senator reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to championing policies geared towards youth empowerment, job creation initiatives, enhancing education and healthcare access, promoting agricultural development, implementing poverty reduction strategies, fostering infrastructure development, empowering women, and ensuring community security. He extended a heartfelt call to his supporters and political allies, urging them to join him under the PRP banner to advance their collective struggle for good governance, accountability, and sustainable development within Bauchi State. He concluded by assuring the state's residents that his dedication to their progress and welfare remains steadfast, pledging to continue providing effective representation at all governmental levels.
