Shiba Inu Burning Mystery: Major Platform Anomaly Halts SHIB Destruction!

A social media discussion revealed issues with Shiba Inu's ShibTorch burn mechanism, showing 'failed to load burn' information on shib.io due to a defunct indexer and a paused SHIB bridge route. Despite these challenges, ShibWatch data confirms that ShibTorch has successfully burned 69.32 billion SHIB, and the system is currently under maintenance for critical infrastructure updates.

Shiba Inu Burning Mystery: Major Platform Anomaly Halts SHIB Destruction!

A recent social media discussion on X highlighted concerns regarding the Shiba Inu (SHIB) burning mechanism, ShibTorch. SHIB community member Ed Salomons initiated the conversation by sharing a screenshot of Shibarium-based burner Shibtorch's page on the official Shiba Inu website, shib.io. The page displayed a "failed to load burn" message, with an empty tab for SHIB in the total accumulated amount section, prompting questions about its functionality and current status.

Long-time SHIB community member Mazrael provided clarity, explaining the root causes behind these observations. According to Mazrael, the shib.io ShibTorch page sources its numerical data from an indexer that is no longer operational, leading to the persistent "failed to load burn information" error. Beyond this display issue, a critical problem lies with the paused bridge that facilitates the SHIB route. This bridge is essential for ShibTorch's operations, even though the system continues to collect BONE gas fees.

Mazrael detailed the intended functionality of ShibTorch: it collects BONE tokens generated from Shibarium fees, converts its allocated share into SHIB tokens on Shibarium, and then bridges these SHIB tokens to a designated 'dead wallet' on the Ethereum blockchain for permanent removal from circulation. However, the burning process is currently stalled due to two primary constraints. Firstly, the Shibarium-based burn portal requires a minimum of 1,000 BONE to initiate a burn. As of the discussion, only 371.37 BONE had been collected, which prevents the contract from triggering the burn. Secondly, the Ethereum component of the burn cannot be completed. This is because the 'exitandburn' function attempts to claim SHIB via the bridge's ERC20 lane, but the 'rootchainmanager' has been unable to release ERC20s from escrow since a significant exploit occurred in 2025. Consequently, any attempted burn is likely to fail until the bridge for the SHIB route is fully reopened and functional.

Despite these current operational hurdles and the defunct indexer on shib.io, actual SHIB burning has indeed occurred. Mazrael bypasses the faulty shib.io data by extracting information directly from contract data via the ShibWatch tracker. According to ShibWatch, 69.32 billion SHIB tokens have been burned by Shibarium's ShibTorch under 'ecosystem burns'. This substantial amount was valued at approximately $1.27 million at the respective times of each burn. Mazrael posits that ShibTorch has the potential to become the most significant contributor to SHIB burns after Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who famously sent 410.24 trillion SHIB to dead wallets in May 2021.

Currently, ShibTorch is undergoing maintenance, as critical infrastructure components, including the bridge and other integral parts of its system, are being actively worked on. The reopening of bridge lanes other than BONE is also being tracked, suggesting ongoing efforts to restore and enhance the burning mechanism's full functionality.
