Seven Big 12 Women's Teams Make NCAA Tournament Field
The Big 12 Conference had seven teams seeded in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament, which starts later this week at venues around the country.
The TCU Horned Frogs, who won both the regular-season and conference tournament titles, were the highest seeded team at No. 2. The Baylor Bears, who were second to the Horned Frogs in both the regular season and the conference tournament, where seeded No. 4.
That’s important for the Horned Frogs (31-3) and the Bears (27-7) because both teams will host a sub-regional this weekend. The Horned Frogs have never hosted a sub-regional before. The last time the Bears hosted one was in 2022, which was Nicki Collen’s first year as coach.
First-round games will be set for March 21 or 22. Full schedules will be released later Sunday.
TCU was the No. 2 seed in the Birmingham 3 Region and will host Fairleigh Dickinson, the No. 15 seed, on Friday.
Baylor is the No. 4 seed in Spokane Region 1 and will face the Grand Canyon Lopes in the first round at Foster Pavilion.
The remaining Big 12 teams to make the field where the Oklahoma State Cowgirls (25-6), the West Virginia Mountaineers (24-7), the Kansas State Wildcats (26-7), the Utah Utes (22-8) and the Iowa State Cyclones (22-11).
Oklahoma State will be the No. 7 seed and will play in Spokane Region 4 on Saturday against No. 10 seed South Dakota State in Storrs, Conn., on Saturday.
West Virginia was the No. 6 seed in the Birmingham Region 2 and will face either the Columbia Lions or the Washington Huskies, who will play a First Four game as No. 11 seeds. WVU will play in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Kansas State will play as the No. 5 seed in Spokane Region 4 on Friday as they face No. 12 seed Fairfield. That game will be in Lexington, Ky.
Utah will be the No. 8 seed in the Birmingham Region 2 and will face the No. 9 seeded Indiana Hoosiers in Columbia, S.C. The winner would most likely face No. 1 seed South Carolina.
In Birmingham Region 3, Iowa State will play a First Four game against Princeton as a No. 11 seed on Wednesday. If the Cyclones win, they will play No. 6 seed Michigan on Friday in South Bend, Ind.
