Seth Rogen Interview About His Career & 'The Studio'

Published 7 hours ago2 minute read

Seth Rogen has been nominated for three Golden Globes, five Emmys, at SAG and the Independent Spirits — you name it — but has yet to win any, something to which his studio head character Matt Remick in Apple TV+’s The Studio can certainly relate. The irony is Rogen’s awards luck just may be changing significantly with the out-of-the-box success of the first season of his movie-industry comedy series, which just as it is unveiling the Season 1 finale has already been picked up for a second season. And deservedly so: It not only offers much to recognize and laugh at for those in the industry, but it also is also striking a chord with those who are nowhere near Hollywood.

Rogen joins me on my Deadline video series Behind the Lens to talk about the universality of what they are doing on this show, his work not only as its star (the beleaguered head of the fictional studio) but also as co-creator and producer with longtime partner Evan Goldberg and other producers from shows like Veep.

Rogen tells me why the time is right for this, how he personally relates to the character and how close it is to real life, how they have landed all those guest-star cameos including none other than Martin Scorsese in episode 1, and Ron Howard with whom he gets into a knock-down drag-out fight. Funny stuff. Rogen also talks about the stellar cast of regulars including Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, Catherine O’Hara and Bryan Cranston and just what real-life figures on which they are possibly based (we are talking about you, Amy Pascal). We also find out how he corralled Netflix honcho Ted Sarandos for a guest shot in the show’s Golden Globes episode and how Rogen convinced him to do a scene in the men’s room while taking a leak on global television (!). Plus so much more about the life and career of one of our top comedic talents in movies and TV and TV shows about movies.

To watch our conversation and to go “behind the lens” with Seth Rogen, watch the video above.

Join me every Monday and Friday during Emmy season for a new episode of Behind the Lens.
