Democracy for Citizens (DCP) Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has dared the government to arrest him, noting that waylaying him on the roads will not intimidate him or his supporters.

Speaking during a press conference in Nairobi on Monday, May 19, 2025, Gachagua condemned police action on Sunday, May 18, 2025, where his lawyer Ndegwa Njiru revealed that his Wamunyoro and Karen homes had been surrounded by sleuths planning to arrest him.

“The drama of waylaying us on roads must stop. If the government knows that I have committed a crime under the laws of Kenya, and is identified in the penal code, they know all my homes. They don’t need to waylay me on the road,” Gachagua stated.

“Let them just come here, and if I have committed a crime, let them come and arrest me and take whatever action that they want to take,” he charged.

The former deputy president equally revealed that the officers at his homes on Sunday, May 18, 2025, had planned to plant weapons on his convoy.

“It was my responsibility to put up a team of civilian firearm holders to escort me, and it is not illegal or wrong,” Gachagua stated.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Sunday, May 18, 2025, castigated the state for what he termed intimidation of leaders.

“This intimidation of the Opposition must stop. Mr Ruto, if you want to arrest Deputy President @rigathi, do it the right way; follow the law. We are prepared to produce DP Gachagua before the DCI. Please stop abducting Kenyans and their leaders. Abductions are primitive and cowardly,” Kalonzo stated.

Concerns of the arrest of Gachagua followed the launch of his new DCP party in Lavington, which turned chaotic after rowdy goons stormed the event as the leaders were leaving.

In the tension that saw several attendees, including journalists, injured, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated that investigations were ongoing to establish the identities of plain-clothes firearm holders seen firing shots to calm the tensions during the event.

Gachagua’s more than 200 security detail was withdrawn in 2024 following his acrimonious impeachment on October 17, 2024.

His sustained campaign against the ruling Kenya-Kwanza administration has placed him on a collision course with several pro-government politicians, with several calling for his arrest.

Belgut MP and chairperson of the National Assembly committee on defence, intelligence and foreign relations indicated that Gachagua’s arrest is imminent.

“The statements that he continues to issue are extremely dangerous to this country. It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when he will be arrested,” Koech said on a live TV interview on Monday, May 19, 2025.
