Senate disappointed by Eldoret's 64 Stadium delays
The Senate County Public Accounts Committee has pointed out incompetence and slow work by the contractors at the 64 Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
Led by Vice Chairperson Johnes Mwaruma, who is also the Taita Taveta County Senator, the Committee said despite the project having gobbled up Ksh 750 million of its total budget of Ksh. 1.1 billion, the works are still below 50 percent complete.
Mwaruma urged the county to sign a return-to-work formula with the contractor to resume work at the facility that has become an eyesore.
“We should not be abandoning projects and instead we should ensure they are complete to avoid wasting taxpayers’ money. The county should agree with the contractor on how the work will resume,” said Mwaruma.
The senators described the workmanship as “shoddy” and questioned how the project could be completed with the limited funds remaining.
Senators present during the inspection tour included Okong’o Omogeni (Nyamira), Samson Cherargei (Nandi), Mwenda Gataya (Tharaka Nithi), and Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo).
“This is a sports rich area and it is a big mistake not to complete facilities for our athletes. The county says the work is 70-percent complete but what has been done so far is not way near half of the project,” said Cherargei.
The project initially received financing from the World Bank, but the lender pulled out, forcing the county government to take over.
The stadium with a capacity of at least 30,000 people, was initially to be completed in 2022 but the contractor has given fresh timelines of December 2025.
