Scottish Icon Ewan McGregor Crowned with Bafta Scotland for Stellar Career

Acclaimed Scottish actor Ewan McGregor is set to be honored with an outstanding contribution award from Bafta Scotland next month, recognizing his “exceptional body of work” across film and television. The prestigious accolade will be presented at the Bafta Scotland awards ceremony on Sunday, November 16, held in Glasgow. McGregor, who hails from Perth and Kinross, is celebrated for a career spanning decades, marked by diverse and impactful performances.
McGregor first rose to prominence in the 1990s with memorable roles in films such as “Brassed Off,” “Shallow Grave,” and the iconic 1996 movie “Trainspotting,” which significantly contributed to his early recognition in the industry.
His career later saw him take on global blockbuster roles, most notably as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, a character he reprised for the Disney+ original series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” in 2022. Other prominent film appearances include the musical “Moulin Rouge!” in 2001 and the sequel “T2: Trainspotting” in 2017, showcasing his versatility as an actor.
Beyond acting, McGregor made his directorial debut in 2016 with “American Pastoral,” based on the novel of the same name, where he also starred alongside Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Connelly. His television work has also been highly celebrated, including an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Roy Halston in the Netflix limited series “Halston,” where he served as an executive producer. More recently, he featured in the Paramount+ TV series “A Gentleman In Moscow” in 2024, also taking on an executive producer role.
On stage, McGregor made his Broadway debut in 2014 as Henry in Tom Stoppard's Tony Award-winning play “The Real Thing.” He returned to the London stage this year, performing at the Wyndham Theatre in “My Master Builder.” His contributions to the entertainment industry were further acknowledged with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2024.
Expressing his gratitude, McGregor stated, “It's so lovely to be thought of for this year's Bafta Scotland special award and I am excited to go to the event, and looking forward to meeting with my peers there. Who knows, a new collaboration could be born out of such a thing! Thank you, Bafta Scotland.” Jude MacLaverty, director of Bafta Scotland, lauded McGregor as a “talented and much-loved Scottish actor who has captivated audiences here at home and globally over many decades.” MacLaverty further highlighted McGregor's remarkable impact both on and off-screen, referencing his iconic performances and humanitarian work with Unicef UK.
