Sandy Creek Bridge Refurbishment Enhances Brisbane to Toowoomba Trail, Connecting Coominya, Esk: Here's to Know More - Travel And Tour World
Thursday, July 10, 2025
The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads has finished the Sandy Creek Railway Bridge upgrade, the latest addition to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail’s ongoing improvements. Located approximately 7km south of Esk, the newly revitalized bridge crosses Sandy Gully, providing for easier cycling and the safest routes for horse riders, who now have newly allocated routes below and beside the structure.
The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail spans 161 kilometers in length and joins Brisbane to Toowoomba, and in doing so, offers an adventurous track through the beautiful farmlands, forests, and rural towns of southern Queensland. The principal stops along the track include stops at Coominya, Esk, Fernvale, Blackbutt, and Yarraman and the Lockyer Valley. It is therefore the perfect destination for nature enthusiasts, connecting these regional towns and communities to Brisbane for simplified regional connectivity.
Within the designated section between Coominya to Esk, the upgraded Sandy Creek Bridge now delivers the smooth ride for riders and cyclists, decreasing the difficulty in managing previously impassable track routes, in wet weather in particular.
The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is more than simply a beautiful vacation spot, it’s also a significant infrastructure project delivering considerable benefits to locals as well as to tourists. It offers:
Increased Local Connectivity: The trail provides the environment with the green alternative to motorized transport, allowing locals to access various towns and services. It also provides connectivity to the modes of transport to the remote-rural communities.
Economic Boost for Local Towns: As more tourists discover the trail, local businesses such as cafes, accommodations, and shops along the route stand to benefit. The influx of visitors from both domestic and international markets boosts the local economy and encourages sustainable tourism.
Active Lifestyle Opportunities: By providing a safe, scenic, and exclusive space for activities, the trail invites more individuals to participate in cycling, walking, and horseback riding, all of which are extremely beneficial for health and wellness.
Accessibility During All Weather Conditions: With the refurbishment of bridges like Sandy Creek and others, the trail now accommodates riders year-round, even during adverse weather, making it more reliable for those who use it for recreation or commuting.
This renovation marks another milestone in making the Coominya to Esk section of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail more accessible. Previously, riders had to contend with challenging, often impassable tracks beneath the bridge, especially during wet conditions. The project ensures a more reliable route, even in adverse weather.
The Sandy Creek Bridge restoration comes after the restoration last year of the Logan Creek Bridge, which was likewise restored utilizing classic trestle designs. The bridges have new, broad decking with railings made from a combination of salvaged, in-place, and newly obtained timber, replicating the appearance and intent of the original designs.
The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is a cycling and walking trail, not an operational railway line for passenger services. Therefore, there are no train tickets available for travel along the trail itself. The trail follows the path of the old Brisbane–Toowoomba railway line, but instead of serving as a conventional railway, it has been repurposed for outdoor recreational activities such as cycling, walking, and horse riding.
However, if you’re interested in traveling on the actual Queensland Rail network, you can book train tickets for the Queensland Rail services that connect Brisbane to other towns, including Toowoomba.
Go to the Queensland Rail Website: You can reserve tickets for trains such as the Tilt Train or other regional services on the Queensland Rail website.
Travel with the Queensland Rail Travel App: Queensland Rail has an app that allows you to book and manage tickets from your mobile.
Go to a Queensland Rail Station: You might also reserve your tickets at any Queensland Rail station or at travel agencies.
Call Customer Service: You can also call Queensland Rail Customer Service to help you with your booking.
Even though the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is mainly a bike and pedestrian trail, there are additional adventure sites that border on or are in close proximity to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, providing diverse outdoor activities:
Lake Somerset: Located near Kilcoy, Lake Somerset is a popular spot for water activities like fishing, boating, and camping. It’s a scenic stop for those looking to enjoy nature along the trail.
Blackbutt Range: The Blackbutt Range offers stunning views and is a great area for bushwalking, wildlife spotting, and experiencing Queensland’s natural beauty.
The tiny countryside town close to the trail has heritage-listed buildings and makes for a charming stop for bike riders. It’s the ideal place to experience countryside hospitality and learn local history.
Toowoomba Known as the Garden City, Toowoomba is famous for its parks, gardens, and vibrant cultural scene. Visitors can enjoy the Japanese Gardens, Queens Park, and the Cobb+Co Museum, all offering excellent options for outdoor activities and historical exploration. Set on the track, Fernvale is close to countryside and farmland, providing the opportunity to experience rural local culture and countryside vistas. Lockyer Valley: A side trip off the track, the Lockyer Valley is renowned for its history and its farms. It is the best place to visit for farm tours, culinary trails, and hiking.
As the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail expands, it is attracting more and more interest in the field of Queensland adventure tourism. Scenic appeal, quality infrastructure, and local economic advantages mean the track is increasingly being promoted as one of Queensland’s top cycling and adventure venues.
