Sammy Gyamfi's Dollar Gift to Agradaa Sparks Controversy and Apology

A video showing Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Acting Chief Executive Officer for GoldBod, giving money to preacher Nana Agradaa has sparked controversy and criticism. The incident has drawn reactions from various individuals and organizations, including Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Criss Waddle, Ras Mubarak, and Dr. Frank Bannor.

Reverend John Ntim Fordjour criticized Sammy Gyamfi for double standards, especially given the NDC's emphasis on austerity. He accused Gyamfi of breaching the government’s Code of Conduct, referencing the acquisition of a $450,000 Range Rover Autobiography shortly after assuming office. However, it was noted that the video was from 2024, and Gyamfi had previously explained the footage as a kind gesture during a visit to Miami with his wife.

Ghanaian musician Criss Waddle also criticized Gyamfi, labeling the actions as unprofessional and insensitive, considering the economic struggles of grassroots NDC members. Waddle emphasized that such behavior could damage public trust in party leadership.

Sammy Gyamfi addressed the controversy, stating that his actions were a “kind gesture to a fellow human being” and an act of helping someone in need. He expressed regret that the act became public and apologized to NDC members who were hurt by it. Gyamfi reaffirmed his commitment to public service and solving problems for the country.

Nana Agradaa clarified that she had asked Sammy Gyamfi for money to buy fuel, a common request she makes when meeting with ministers. She also stated that Gyamfi advised her to refrain from insulting others and focus on her pastoral work instead of becoming involved in politics. Agradaa mentioned that her husband apologized to Gyamfi on her behalf.

Former Member of Parliament Ras Mubarak called on the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to ensure Agradaa pays the required gift tax on the amount received. He also argued that Gyamfi’s actions could undermine the value of the local currency.

Development Economist Dr. Frank Bannor called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss Sammy Gyamfi from his position as GoldBod CEO, citing a violation of the President’s Code of Ethics for appointees. Bannor quoted Mahama’s emphasis on modesty and avoiding opulence, arguing that Gyamfi’s actions contradicted these principles.

Sammy Gyamfi issued an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the incident, reiterating that his intention was to serve everyone regardless of political affiliations and that he believed he was helping Agradaa in private.
