Sadiq Khan's Diplomatic Push: London Mayor Deepens UK-Nigeria Tech and Trade Ties

London Mayor Sadiq Khan recently concluded a groundbreaking visit to Lagos, Nigeria, marking the first official trip to sub-Saharan Africa by a sitting Mayor of London. The primary objective of this historic tour was to significantly enhance UK-Nigeria relations, fostering deep cooperation across crucial sectors such as creative industries, fintech, and innovation. This visit underscored London’s unwavering dedication to forging long-term, cross-sector partnerships designed to spur inclusive growth, drive digital transformation, and facilitate robust cross-cultural exchange between the two dynamic cities.

During his visit, Mayor Khan spearheaded a formidable delegation of 27 London-based companies, specializing in fintech, enterprise technology, and sustainability. This initiative was expertly supported by London & Partners, the city’s official growth agency, under the leadership of Deputy Mayor for Business and Growth Howard Dawber OBE. The delegation engaged in a series of high-level meetings and curated events, connecting with key Nigerian policymakers, investors, and creatives, with the aim of unlocking new business opportunities across the Africa continent.
A significant highlight of Mayor Khan’s engagements in Lagos was his participation in a panel discussion at the "Bridging Borders: How London and Lagos Can Shape the Future of Global Tech" event. Here, he passionately articulated how London and Lagos could collaboratively shape the future of global innovation, actively encouraging Nigerian tech businesses to explore investment opportunities in London. Lagos, notably, has cemented its position as Africa's undisputed tech and fintech capital, boasting 503 active fintech startups, more than double that of its closest African competitor, according to StartupList Africa.
Furthermore, Mayor Khan co-hosted the Lagos Canvas Reception with Mo Abudu at Ebony Life Place, a vibrant celebration of Nigeria’s burgeoning creative sector. This event celebrated Lagos and London as cultural and creative industry powerhouses, seeking to cultivate even stronger ties between their respective creative ecosystems, encompassing arts, fashion, music, and film—areas central to the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP).
Following his successful engagements in Lagos, Mayor Khan is set to extend his historic trade mission with subsequent stops in Accra, Johannesburg, and Cape Town. This broader tour aims to vigorously advocate for London as a premier global hub for investment, innovation, and cultural exchange, thereby solidifying relationships with nations across the African continent for mutual economic advancement.

Reflecting on the visit, Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed his delight, emphasizing the unique nature of this trip and its potential to further strengthen the deep ties between the UK and African nations. He highlighted Africa's rapidly growing populations and significant economic expansion, foreseeing immense opportunities to deepen partnerships with London over the coming decade, particularly in critical sectors like finance, education, health, technology, creative industries, and sustainability. Mayor Khan also acknowledged the profound role Londoners of African heritage have played in shaping London, viewing the trip as a chance to celebrate shared heritage, history, and culture.
Supporting this sentiment, British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, underscored the UK Government’s unwavering commitment to reinforcing economic and cultural bonds with Nigeria. He affirmed that collaboration spanning trade, fintech, and fashion is actively driving innovation and growth, with the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership poised to unlock new, beneficial opportunities for both economies.
Similarly, UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins of Highbury, lauded the visit as a pivotal moment for the UK’s relationship with Africa, demonstrating a firm dedication to deepening continental ties. He stressed that strengthening trade, investment, and cultural connections is not only crucial for shared economic prosperity but also for nurturing long-term, respectful partnerships that create opportunities for all. This collaborative approach marks a powerful step forward in a journey towards inclusive growth and expanded global partnerships.
