RwandAir Expands Horizons: New Monrovia Office Ignites Liberia's Aviation and Tourism Boom

The recent soft launch of RwandAir’s offline office in Monrovia has been universally hailed as a significant “new dawn” for Liberia’s aviation, tourism, and business sectors. This strategic initiative, spearheaded by Easy Continental Travel Agency, is anticipated to not only strengthen the ties between Liberia and Rwanda but also to unlock substantial new economic opportunities and enhance mobility across West and East Africa.

Madam Gbomai L. Bestman, President and CEO of Easy Continental Travel Agency, spoke passionately at the launch event held at Monrovia City Hall on August 16. She described the milestone as a purposeful and visionary step toward expanding Liberia’s aviation reach. Highlighting a shared history between the two nations, Madam Bestman emphasized, “The move to bring RwandAir to Liberia is a further step of doing this with purpose. Rwanda and Liberia share a common denominator; two war-ravaged countries. With Rwanda generating over US$643 million in tourism last year, I think it’s something we need to tap into. This is our moment, and I am so proud of my country.”

Beyond the immediate trade and tourism benefits, RwandAir’s presence is set to address critical practical needs for thousands of Liberians. Madam Bestman pointed out that approximately 4,000 Liberian students are currently studying in Rwanda, and reliable air service is essential for their travel. She confidently stated that RwandAir would provide this crucial link, assuring that “RwandAir will fly here and will stay,” creating a convenient travel bridge for students, families, and the business community.

The Liberia Civil Aviation Authority (LCAA) has unequivocally welcomed this development as a turning point for the nation’s largely underutilized aviation industry. Deputy Director General Stephen R. Johnson highlighted a stark contrast: while Africa recorded about 236 million travelers last year, Liberia’s two ports saw just over 100,000 passenger movements during the same period. Johnson underscored the immense, untapped potential within the local market, affirming that “Any additional airline to our fleet creates new opportunities. It opens new doors, especially strengthening ties between two nations.” He pledged the LCAA’s continued support for initiatives that bolster Liberia’s aviation sector.

The impact of RwandAir’s arrival extends significantly to Liberia’s cultural and tourism sectors. Madam Kadiatu Konteh-Brohiri, Deputy Minister for Culture and Tourism at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism, lauded the launch as a catalyst for economic growth. She described RwandAir’s imminent operations as “the dawn of a new day for Liberia’s tourism sector,” predicting stronger ties, greater tourism opportunities, and a boost for businesses. “The more airlines come in, the closer we are to becoming a successful tourism nation. Tourism has no boundary,” she added, commending Easy Continental for their perseverance in overcoming challenges to make this breakthrough possible.

Further emphasizing the broad-reaching benefits, the Diaspora Office of the Ministry of State and Presidential Affairs also welcomed RwandAir’s launch. Coordinator Mr. Erasmus T. Williams delivered a statement indicating the office’s readiness to form a direct and strategic partnership with Easy Continental Travel Agency to broaden travel opportunities for Liberians abroad, particularly those seeking affordable and reliable options. Williams asserted that the new service would foster competition within the airline industry, thereby reducing ticket costs and boosting overall air traffic to Liberia. The Diaspora Office plans to highlight this new airline service during upcoming key events, including the Liberia Diaspora Conference 2035 and the annual Diaspora Return Program in December, further amplifying Liberia’s role as a hub for diaspora engagement, business, and tourism.

For the broader African travel sector, RwandAir’s expansion into Liberia serves as a prime example of a new wave of intra-African airline partnerships and enhanced connectivity. This collaboration connects two countries with shared histories of resilience and ambition, demonstrating how aviation can play a pivotal role in national recovery and regional unity. As African carriers increasingly bridge historic divides and cater to the practical needs of students, business travelers, and families, the continent stands to gain from improved mobility, diversified tourism flows, and increased trade. The Monrovia office symbolizes not just progress for Liberia, but the beginning of broader opportunities for the entire region.
