Rwanda's Youth Minister Urges Artists to Lead Fight Against Drug Abuse and Violence

During the second edition of the Rubavu Music Awards and Talent Detection event held in Rubavu District, Minister of Youth and Arts Dr. Abdallah Utumatwishima issued a stern warning to artists and young people regarding the detrimental effects of excessive alcohol use and drug abuse. On Saturday, June 13, the Minister emphasized that such habits are significant contributors to gender-based violence and various other societal problems afflicting the youth.

Rubavu District, identified by Dr. Utumatwishima as a border town, faces a particular concern regarding illicit drug trafficking, amplifying the risks associated with substance abuse among its residents, especially the vibrant artistic community. While refraining from citing specific instances, the Minister noted a common misconception among some artists who believe that alcohol or drugs enhance their confidence or stage performance. He urged them to reject such notions, highlighting the ease with which young individuals can be misled by these harmful behaviors.

"You all look healthy. I have not seen anyone who is drunk or under the influence of drugs," Dr. Utumatwishima observed before delivering his crucial message. He recounted instances where artists, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, have been involved in abusing their partners or committing acts of violence. He passionately called upon artists and the youth to choose discipline and categorically reject gender-based violence and associated behaviors.

The Minister's remarks arrive amidst ongoing legal challenges involving entertainers. Notably, singer Yampano is currently facing trial over serious allegations including drug abuse, assault of his girlfriend, battery, issuing threats, and unlawful confinement. Other similar cases involving figures from the entertainment industry have also reached the courts, with alcohol and drug use frequently cited as contributing factors to the alleged offenses.

Reinforcing the message of responsibility and positive development, Brother Vital Ringuyeneza, executive director of Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle, an organization co-hosting the awards with Rubavu District, articulated the broader aims of this year's event. He stated that the edition was specifically designed around the pillars of talent development, violence prevention, and mental health awareness. "We want our youth to be disciplined," Ringuyeneza affirmed, underscoring that the platform extends beyond merely celebrating music; it serves as a vital opportunity to raise awareness about critical issues impacting young people, including behaviors that can severely harm their lives.

The Minister's stance also found strong support from within the local artistic community. Rubavu DJ Selekta Dady acknowledged that while alcohol is a prevalent element in entertainment circles, drug abuse and violence are entirely unacceptable. He stressed that celebrity status or involvement in show business does not grant license for drug abuse, urging a collective condemnation of such actions. DJ Selekta Dady further highlighted the tragic reality of many talented artists whose careers have been irrevocably destroyed by excessive alcohol and drug use, often leading to imprisonment or mandatory rehabilitation.
