Russell Brand Trial Explodes: Second Woman Alleges 'Wild-Eyed Maniac' Encounter
Russell Brand's criminal trial in London continues, with two accusers providing detailed testimonies of alleged sexual assaults and rape dating back to 1999 and 2001. Brand has pleaded not guilty to all charges, which include multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault, while the accusers recount their experiences in court.
The criminal trial of actor and comedian Russell Brand is continuing in London, where he faces a series of serious allegations. Brand has been charged with three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault. These charges relate to alleged incidents involving six different women, spanning a period from 1999 to 2009. Brand has consistently pleaded not guilty to all charges and has denied the allegations against him.
Brand appeared at Southwark Crown Court dressed in a grey suit, white shirt, and a grey skinny tie, accompanied by his wife, Laura Gallacher. Outside the courthouse, he described the trial as an “extraordinary and stressful situation,” but also as an “exploration of truth and justice,” expressing prayers for all involved and hopes for beneficial conclusions, according to Sky News. The trial is projected to last six weeks.
On Friday, the court heard testimony from Brand’s second accuser, who testified in person from behind a blue screen to protect her identity, a standard practice for complainants in U.K. sexual assault cases. She recounted meeting Brand while working at MTV in 2001, where she complimented his T-shirt referencing the film “I Am Spartacus.” She described their initial interaction as “jovial and cheerful banter.” When Brand asked for directions to the bathroom, she offered to show him as she was heading that way herself.
However, once they reached the bathroom, her account states that Brand’s demeanor abruptly shifted. She alleged that he grabbed her arm “hard” and repeatedly pleaded with her to “come in, come in, come in.” As she struggled to pull away, she claimed Brand had a “wild look in his eye.” After finally breaking free, she called him an “idiot,” at which point he reportedly “gave up” and entered the toilet. She later questioned how he transformed “from jovial and friendly to this wild-eyed maniac.” The woman told two colleagues about the incident but opted not to inform her managers, believing she wouldn't be believed due to Brand’s status as a significant “asset” to MTV, where he hosted several programs at the time. She ultimately came forward to the police following the Channel 4 documentary investigating Brand in 2023, stating, “I decided I thought it was the right thing to come forward.”
During cross-examination by Brand’s defense lawyer, Ian Winter KC, it was suggested that Brand was not attempting to assault her but rather seeking a “consensual” sexual encounter. The accuser refuted this, responding, “Why would you try to drag someone into a toilet unless you wanted to assault them? I was there, I know what happened.” Winter also probed whether her memory of the incident might have been influenced by the extensive media coverage surrounding Brand in 2023. She maintained that she “knew it was wrong” immediately and that the documentary and press coverage had not altered her perception of the situation.
Earlier, on Thursday, the court heard the testimony of the first alleged victim via her police video interview. She detailed an alleged rape by Brand that occurred at the Labour Party conference in 1999. She had met Brand at a cabaret show he was performing in and subsequently invited him back to her hotel room. Initially, she believed he was gay and felt “sexually safe” with him. However, after she went to the bathroom, she alleged that she emerged to find Brand partially undressed. He then reportedly demanded she take topless photos of him – which were shown to the court – before allegedly raping her. She described her fear, saying, “I was frightened. I remember feeling ‘what on earth have I got myself into’ — and then he did rape me.” She claimed she verbally said no and struggled to resist him, noting his significant weight. “I did say no,” she reiterated, adding, “I didn’t want his dirty penis inside me. I value my body.” She was also cross-examined in person by Winter, similarly from behind a screen.
