Royal Spectacle: Trump's Buckingham Palace State Banquet Unveiled, From Menu Secrets to Dazzling Gowns

A lavish state banquet unfolded at Windsor Castle, hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla in honor of US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania, marking a significant moment during their state visit to the UK. The event, imbued with grandeur and meticulous planning, brought together senior members of the British Royal Family and their distinguished American guests.
Earlier in the day, the Royal Family extended a personal and family-centered welcome to the Trumps. President Trump, arriving at Windsor Castle via his Marine One helicopter to circumvent potential protests, was warmly greeted by King Charles, whom he had previously referred to as a "friend." The day saw a display of constant camaraderie between the two leaders, marked by shared laughs and jokes. The Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, were tasked with the initial welcome at Victoria House, a lesser-known property within the Royal Kitchen Gardens. Princess Kate greeted President Trump with a wide smile, receiving compliments from him that she looked "beautiful." President Trump also warmly embraced Prince William, referring to him as "my friend" and expressing pleasure at seeing him again, recalling their prior encounter in Paris. The full pomp and pageantry of the British military were on display, with Armed Forces personnel flanking the pathway to George IV Gate as the Carriage Procession, accompanied by a Sovereign's Escort of the Household Cavalry, transported the King, Queen, President, and First Lady towards the Castle. The President also undertook a personal journey to St George's Chapel within Windsor Castle, where he paid tribute and placed a wreath at the final resting place of Queen Elizabeth II, describing it as a "great honour" to visit the tomb of a "spectacular woman."
For the glamorous evening dinner, the Princess of Wales showcased a new Philippa Lepley full-length hand-embroidered gold lace evening coat worn over a silk crepe gown. The exquisite coat featured hand-embroidered roses with couched gold cording, French knots, and satin-stitched blooms, highlighting her dedication to British craftsmanship. Kate also adorned herself with the Royal Family Order of King Charles III, Royal Family Order of Elizabeth II, Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, and GCVO Star and Sash. Prince William was impeccably dressed in white tie and a Windsor tail coat, complemented by the Most Noble Order of the Garter Sash with the Lesser George, miniature medals including the Order of the Bath and various Jubilee and Coronation medals, and Chest Orders of the Order of the Garter and Order of the Thistle, alongside the Neck Order of the Order of the Bath. Queen Camilla chose a Royal blue silk marocain embroidered dress by Fiona Clare, paired with a sapphire and diamond tiara and the King's Family Order. First Lady Melania Trump opted for a fitted, off-the-shoulder, long-sleeved yellow gown with a contrasting pink belt.
Ahead of the grand dinner, King Charles and Queen Camilla personally inspected the 50-meter banquet table in St George's Hall, which was resplendent with extravagant floral displays featuring pink, purple, and yellow blooms. The monarchs extended their gratitude to the Household staff for their meticulous planning and execution of the event.
In keeping with tradition, the lavish menu, penned in French, featured a selection of exquisite British ingredients. Guests were served Hampshire watercress panna cotta with parmesan shortbread and quail egg salad to start. The main course consisted of organic Norfolk chicken ballotine wrapped in courgettes, accompanied by a thyme and savoury infused jus. For dessert, a bombe glacee cardinal—a vanilla ice cream bombe with a Kentish raspberry sorbet centre and lightly poached Victoria plums—was presented.
The selection of beverages was thoughtfully curated to honor the distinguished guests. Wines included Wiston Estate Cuvée 2016, Domaine Bonneau de Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018, and Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 2000. Sir Winston Churchill's preferred champagne, Pol Roger extra cuvee de Reserve 1998, was also chosen, acknowledging President Trump's admiration for the wartime prime minister. Post-dinner, guests were treated to Warre's 1945 vintage port, a tribute to Mr. Trump's tenure as both the 45th and 47th President of the United States and its proximity to his birth year. A Hennessy 1912 Cognac Grande Champagne was available, acknowledging the birth year of his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod. Furthermore, a Bowmore Queen's Cask whisky from Islay, originally gifted to the late Queen Elizabeth in 1980 and bottled for her Golden Jubilee in 2002, was selected to represent President Trump's Scottish roots.
A unique addition to the banquet was a bespoke transatlantic whisky sour cocktail. This specially crafted drink, billed as a UK/US take on the traditional whisky sour, blended the smoky depth of Johnnie Walker Black with the bright citrus of marmalade. It was crowned with a pecan foam and garnished with a toasted marshmallow set on a star-shaped biscuit, designed to evoke the warmth of a fireside S'more. However, President Trump, a teetotaller due to the tragic loss of his elder brother from alcohol-related complications, did not partake in the alcoholic beverages, including the custom cocktail. The White House had, however, informed him about the carefully considered selections.
This state banquet stood in contrast to previous occasions, such as Mr. Trump's 2019 state visit hosted by the late Queen Elizabeth II, which featured a different menu. Similarly, a French state visit in July, welcoming President Emmanuel Macron, had a distinct menu crafted by renowned French chef Raymond Blanc and a different bespoke cocktail, L'entente. The careful attention to detail and personalized tributes underscored the significance of President Trump's second state visit to the UK.
