Royal Rift Widens: Prince Harry's Displeasure Over Meghan Markle's Latest Move Revealed

A recent social media video posted by the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has sparked widespread controversy and further clouded prospects for a reconciliation within the Royal family. The footage, captured from her car in Paris following a Balenciaga fashion show on Saturday, October 4th, inadvertently featured the Pont de l'Alma bridge. This location holds immense tragic significance, as it connects to the tunnel where Princess Diana, her companion Dodi Fayed, and driver Henri Paul lost their lives in a fatal collision in August 1997.
The video, which concluded with an out-of-focus shot of Meghan’s high-heeled shoes, rapidly circulated across social media platforms. Critics swiftly condemned the Duchess as "insensitive," with many branding her upload "tasteless" and claiming she had "disrespected" Diana's enduring legacy. Online sentiment reflected a profound sense of disappointment and anger regarding the apparent oversight.
Royal commentators have weighed in on the incident, underscoring its negative repercussions. Richard Fitzwilliams, a Royal commentator, suggested to OK! that while Meghan likely made an "honest error" and did not intend to offend, the clip was "grossly insensitive." He believes Prince Harry would be "horrified and extremely angry," given the video's connection to the most traumatic period of his life. Fitzwilliams added that Meghan, as a prominent public figure and "brand," "cannot afford to behave like that," and such "mistakes hold weight."
The alleged reaction from within Royal circles was equally severe. An insider was quoted extensively, claiming Prince William, 43, was "livid beyond words" and would regard it as an "ill-judged and self-centered mistake." Fitzwilliams concurred that the backlash places Harry in a difficult position regarding public support for his wife, stating, "He is unable to shield Meghan from the repercussions of her mistake, it cannot be undone."
Meghan’s trip to the French capital marked her first European venture in two years, with Prince Harry remaining in California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Her primary purpose was to support her friend, Balenciaga’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli. During her visit, she was photographed with fashion icon Anna Wintour and filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, a move that undoubtedly elevated her standing in the fashion world. Jennie Bond, former BBC Royal correspondent, noted that the interest shown by figures like Anna Wintour indicates the fashion world values Meghan, suggesting a future direction focused on fashion collaborations and commercial opportunities.
However, the controversy surrounding the video overshadowed any potential positive media coverage of her fashion engagement. Jennie Bond also echoed the sentiment that distressing Harry with the video would have been "the last thing Meghan meant to do," yet acknowledged, "She could have thought about it harder, but, like so many people these days, it's all about sharing your life instantly without considering the implications."
This incident is seen as the latest in a series of setbacks hindering the already turbulent path towards Royal family reconciliation. Despite a face-to-face meeting between Prince Harry and King Charles, 76, just last month on September 10th at Clarence House, progress has been fragile. Harry's representatives had even accused "sources intent on sabotaging any reconciliation" of leaking details about that meeting. Furthermore, Harry's recent candid remarks in Kyiv, where he promoted his Invictus Games Foundation, about his memoir "Spare" and his lack of regrets, were also perceived by Richard Fitzwilliams as potentially doing "more damage than good," making another meeting between the King and Harry unlikely in the near future.
Ultimately, while Meghan's Paris trip may have boosted her fashion credentials, the controversial video near a site of profound Royal tragedy has intensified scrutiny on her actions and compounded existing tensions within the Royal family, further postponing any genuine hopes for a harmonious reunion.
