Royal Reckoning: Fergie's 'Pregnant Affair' Scandal Reignites with Epstein Email Controversy

Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, finds herself embroiled in what many observers suggest could be her most significant royal scandal to date. A recently resurfaced email from 2011, in which she allegedly referred to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as her "supreme friend" and appeared to apologize for publicly criticizing him, has led to several charities dropping her. This latest controversy has ignited speculation that it could finally mark the end of her involvement within the Royal family's inner circles, despite her historical resilience.
Ferguson's journey through royal life has been punctuated by numerous challenges. Her relationship with Prince Andrew, Duke of York, began after they were seated together at Royal Ascot in 1985, though they had known each other since childhood. Their engagement was announced on February 19, 1986, Andrew's 26th birthday, with a distinctive ruby ring. The couple married at Westminster Abbey on July 23, 1986, and subsequently welcomed two daughters: Princess Beatrice in 1988 and Princess Eugenie in 1990.
However, their marriage faced strain due to Prince Andrew's demanding naval career, which often kept him away from home for extended periods. Sarah famously recounted spending eight months of her first pregnancy alone and claimed Prince Philip had forbidden her from living with her husband at his various naval postings. In a 2010 interview with US TV host Ernie Manouse, she lamented, "My deal was that I was marrying my man, who happened to be a prince and a naval officer. But what I got was not the man, I got the palace and didn't get him. For our marriage, I saw him 40 days a year."
This profound sense of isolation is believed to have driven Sarah into another relationship. While expecting Princess Eugenie in 1989, and in her third year of marriage, she reportedly met American businessman Steve Wyatt at the Houston Grand Opera's British Opera Festival. They quickly became infatuated, with Wyatt allegedly becoming the "love of her life." Royal author David Leigh asserted that "Steve Wyatt was the main reason for the breakdown of her marriage," explaining that Sarah met him at a low point when she felt unsupported by Andrew, finding in Wyatt a "very handsome and rich Texan who was very attentive and loving." The relationship, however, ended, reportedly devastating Sarah when Wyatt became engaged to another woman.
The turning point for the ducal couple arrived in August 1992, when highly publicized photographs emerged of Sarah sunbathing in the South of France with her American financial adviser, John Bryan—a close friend of Steve Wyatt—who was famously pictured sucking her toes. Though Sarah later stated she did not desire a divorce from Andrew, this public scandal effectively removed the decision from her hands. The Queen officially announced their separation in a terse statement in January 1992, citing "media speculation" during a general election campaign. Prince Andrew himself was not without controversy, with royal author Andrew Lownie claiming his former driver alleged Andrew had slept with "more than a dozen women before their first anniversary."
Following their separation, Sarah endured a "brutal and immediate" exile from official Royal circles, despite her relationship with Andrew remaining remarkably cordial, marked by family holidays and public appearances. Princess Margaret, the Queen's sister, penned a scathing letter accusing Sarah of bringing "more to bring shame on the family than could ever have been imagined" and questioning how she dared to "discredit us like this." While the late Queen was thought to have eventually pardoned her, Prince Philip's resentment reportedly persisted until his death, making his discomfort at encountering Sarah at Princess Eugenie's 2018 wedding to Jack Brooksbank well-known.
Despite these past and present controversies, Sarah Ferguson has remained fiercely loyal to Prince Andrew. The former couple continues to share Royal Lodge, even as Andrew faced his own significant scandal: his withdrawal from official engagements following his 2019 BBC interview regarding his association with Jeffrey Epstein. This led to the late Queen stripping Andrew of his military honors and patronages in January 2022. Fergie's support throughout these turbulent times has been described as steadfast, even earning her commendation from Royal insiders for reportedly keeping Andrew away from public events during an alleged Chinese spy scandal last Christmas.
Her recent re-engagement with the Royal fold, including attending a festive gathering at Sandringham the previous Christmas despite neither she nor Andrew being working royals, offered a glimpse of a potential return. However, the re-emergence of the "supreme friend" email about Jeffrey Epstein is now poised to spark challenging new questions about any future role or acceptance within the Royal family.
