Ronan Keating Unveils Emotional Music Journey: Grief, New Songs, and Star Collaborations
Ronan Keating is set to release a new album featuring collaborations with Ed Sheeran and Brendan Brown, marking a significant return to music after overcoming personal tragedies. The artist shares how songwriting helped him navigate grief, and he looks forward to his upcoming tour and a special performance with José Carreras.
Ronan Keating, the celebrated Irish artist, once famously equated life to a rollercoaster, a sentiment that has profoundly echoed throughout his own career and personal journey. With an illustrious career spanning over a quarter-century, Keating has achieved remarkable success, securing three U.K. solo No. 1 singles, including the iconic “Life Is A Rollercoaster,” and four No. 1 albums. As a pivotal member of Boyzone, his accomplishments further extend to six U.K. No. 1 singles and five No. 1 albums, culminating in a total of nine chart-topping singles and albums.
Currently, Keating is immersed in the creation of a new record, with the highly anticipated first single featuring a collaboration with renowned singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran and Wheatus frontman Brendan Brown. This upcoming album marks a significant new chapter in his musical career, which he is eager to release.
However, Keating's journey has also been marked by profound personal losses. Following the global challenges of the pandemic, he tragically lost his brother, Ciaran Keating, in a car accident in 2023. This devastating event, along with the earlier loss of his Boyzone bandmate Stephen Gately in 2009, deeply impacted the veteran artist. In times of darkness, art often provides solace, and Keating has found clarity and calm in his stage performances. He initially struggled to write about Ciaran, experiencing a creative block for several years.
A breakthrough occurred during a trip to Australia earlier this year, where Keating, known for his long history as a reality TV judge, stumbled upon a melody with his wife, Storm. This spontaneous creative session led to the co-writing of a song, the first he had penned since his brother’s passing. This deeply personal experience served as a catalyst, enabling him to reignite his songwriting and progress with the new album. He credits his wife’s unique perspective on their shared grief for helping them pour their hearts into the song, highlighting music’s profound role in his healing process.
With this renewed creative energy, Keating expresses enthusiasm for the ongoing album project. He and Storm are actively involved in studio writing, and he feels musically invigorated, anticipating the release of the album. While an official title is yet to be announced, Keating is pleased with the progress, noting they are approximately halfway through. He confidently states that the first single will indeed be the collaboration with Ed Sheeran and Brendan Brown, a moment he anticipates will be significant.
Beyond the new album, Keating is also celebrating the 26th anniversary of “Life Is A Rollercoaster” with a tour that includes dates across the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. A particularly monumental event awaits him on December 5, when he will join an esteemed lineup including Robbie Williams, The Corrs, and Natalie Imbruglia at the Carreras & Friends concert at the Gabba Stadium in Brisbane, Australia. Keating is especially thrilled about the opportunity to perform with José Carreras, recalling his profound experience dueting with Luciano Pavarotti in 1998 on the Boyzone hit “No Matter What.” He considers singing with Carreras a huge honor, a fulfillment of a long-held aspiration, and is excited to perform in the iconic Gabba stadium, a venue that will host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
