Portugal’s iconic captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, has been handed a crucial reprieve by FIFA, clearing him to feature in the nation’s opening fixtures of the 2026 World Cup. The decision follows FIFA’s move to suspend the final two matches of an earlier three-game disciplinary ban imposed on the superstar.

The initial punishment stemmed from an on-field altercation during Portugal’s penultimate qualifier against Ireland in Dublin. In that match, which Portugal lost 2-0, Ronaldo received a straight red card for an elbow struck into the back of defender Dara O’Shea.
