Roger Marcus Flowers | Iredell Free News
, 87, passed away in Sugar Land, Texas on Sunday, December 1, 2024, surrounded by family.
Roger and his sister Judi were born and raised by Rosette (Abernathy) and Lloyd Marcus (LM) Flowers Jr. in Dallas, N.C. It was there that in the first grade Roger met Eleanor Lineberger, who would become his best friend, the love of his life, and wife of 60 years. Together they raised three children, Mike, Patti, and Kristi.
The essence of Roger’s life was service, leadership, compassion and a positive outlook – qualities he demonstrated in every area of his life. Roger graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Through the years, Roger was a loyal employee who began and finished his career at Union Carbide, where he retired as the Worldwide Director of Research and Design. He had many fond memories of those years and his co-workers, many of who became lifelong friends. He remained an engineer at heart, which would show up in everyday activities, even the methodical and research-based approach he used in cooking, basic handiwork, and activities with the grandkids. His technical expertise and guidance were invaluable resources to all who knew him.
Roger and Eleanor moved many times, but were residents of the North Olmsted and Westlake area for 45 years where they were active members of John Knox Church. Roger was a deacon, taught Sunday school, and was on the finance committee. They were also members of the North Ridge Racket Club and The Tennis Club in Avon. In later years, Roger and Eleanor spent their winters in Fort Myers, Fla., where they developed many close friendships and Roger served in multiple leadership roles on the condominium association. They enjoyed the nice weather and the opportunities to play tennis and golf. Whether he was in Ohio or Florida, in retirement, Roger was an avid golfer with a steady group of men who were dear friends.
Roger cared deeply about his family and loved his role as Grandpa. He attended sporting events, built Pinewood Derby cars, traveled with them to Florida, supported academic ventures, constructed giant ice forts that lasted well into spring, took them skiing, sledding, and hiking, just to name a few. He always had an abundance of energy and motivation, so when grandkids came to visit, he was committed to keeping up with them.
Wherever Roger moved or traveled, he made friends and became an active member of the community. His most recent move brought him to Sugar Land at Brookdale First Colony, where he forged many dear friendships through Rummikub, Bible study, Bridge, Poker, and Book Club. He cherished those years and the special friends he met who also became like family.
Roger truly cared deeply about friends, family and associates, leaving a lasting impact on everyone who knew him. Roger was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; daughter, Patti; and his parents, Rosette and LM. Left to remember Roger’s friendly and good-natured spirit are his son, Mike (Sally); daughter, Kristi Flowers; four grandchildren; Crystal (Brian) Regone, Alyse (Nick) James, Olivia Loesch, and Christopher Loesch; eight great-grandchildren; and his sister Judi (Dave) Gillespie.
Graveside service for Roger will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville, N.C.
